Maroons Defeat Quakers 8-3 on Tuesday Night
SALEM – The Roanoke College baseball team picked up an Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory on Tuesday, defeating Guilford College 8-3.  The Maroons now have a record of 12-15; 5-7 ODAC, while the Quakers are 13-15; 5-9 in ODAC play.

Mark Manthe had a team-high five RBIs in the contest, the most since he did it against Emory & Henry earlier in the season.  With the five RBIs, he is tied for first in the ODAC in RBIs, matching Beau Flinchum of Hampden-Sydney.

The Maroons got a big jump early on the Quakers as Mark Manthe hit a three run home run in the bottom of the first inning.  With the blast, Manthe knocked in Brian Kluge and Cam Cassady who led off the inning with base hits.  In the bottom of the third, Manthe picked up his fourth RBI in two at-bats after knocking in Cassady again.  After three innings, Roanoke led 4-0.

Guilford put its first run up on the board in the top of the fifth, as John Macon Smith reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Will Byrd to score.  The Maroons answered quickly in the bottom of the fifth as Manthe had another RBI, hitting a single up the middle to score Reece Kingery.  As the next batter, Clark Crutchfield hit a triple to right field, scoring both Manthe and Brian Kluge on the play.  After five innings, Roanoke had a 7-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, Smith and Herc Ingels scored on an error, pulling Guilford within four, 7-3.  The Maroons would score one more run in the bottom of the eighth as Kingery reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Jacob Clifton to cross the plate.  That would hold as the final run as Roanoke won, 8-3.

Mark Manthe led the Maroons in hitting, going 3-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs.  Cam Cassady and Reece Kingery each finished the contest with two hits, while Clark Crutchfield was second in RBIs with two.  Jacob McMillan (1-1) picked up the victory in the game, pitching the first five innings, giving up one run off three hits and striking out three.

Herc Ingels led the Quakers in batting, going 2-4 in the game.  Five different Guilford players finished with one hit each.  Ingels, John Macon Smith and Will Byrd each scored one run during the game.  Lou Trosch picked up the loss, giving up seven runs off seven hits, striking out four.
The Maroons return to action on Thursday, April 4th as they take on Southern Virginia in double header action at Kiwanis Field.  The first game is scheduled for a 5:00 PM start.
