Maroons Edged By Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday Afternoon
VIRGINIA BEACH – The Roanoke College baseball team fell in a pair of close contests to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon, 2-1 and 5-4.  The Maroons now have a record of 12-17; 5-9 ODAC, while the Marlins sit with a record of 9-20; 6-8 in the ODAC.
 
The Marlins jumped on the scoreboard early as Kenneth Belgrave hit a RBI sacrifice fly ball, allowing Matt Ittner to score, taking a 1-0 lead.  Neither team scored over the next six innings, until Virginia Wesleyan's Billy Crowe reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Casey Bryant to cross the plate, giving the Marlins a 2-0 lead.  Roanoke tried to rally in the ninth as Clark Crutchfield hit an RBI single to left field, plating Bradley Mattox.  However that would be the only run in the game that would cross the plate for the Maroons, as Virginia Wesleyan won the first game, 2-1.
 
Brian Kluge, Mark Manthe and Clark Crutchfield all finished with two hits in the contest, while Bradley Mattox scored the lone run of the game for the Maroons.  Clark Crutchfield picked up Roanoke's one RBI.  Cameron Holshouser (3-5) was tabbed with the loss, as he gave up two runs off one hit in six innings of work.  He also struck out four batters on the afternoon.
 
For Virginia Wesleyan, Matt Ittner had the only hit on the afternoon for the squad, while Ittner and Casey Bryant crossed the plate for the Marlilns.  Dylan Stokus (3-5) earned the victory, allowing one run off seven hits, while striking out seven batters.  Brooks Kirby picked up the save in one inning of work, striking out two batters.
 
Runs came a little more frequently in the second game for both teams.  As they did in the first contest, Virginia Wesleyans scored the first runs of the game.  Kenneth Belgrave and Jordan Miller each hit RBI doubles that plated a total of three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Neither team scored again until the top of the sixth, when Mark Manthe hit an RBI single to left field, plating Cam Cassady.  After six innings, Roanoke trailed 3-1.
 
Wesleyan's Josh Miller hit a sacrifice fly ball to plate Belgrave, extending the Marlins lead to three, 4-1 after seven innings.  Roanoke's biggest inning came in the top of the eighth.  Bradley Mattox hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Kluge on the play.  With the bases loaded, Jacob Clifton and Cody Craft each took walks that allowed a run each to score, tying the game up at 4-4 by the end of the eighth inning.  However the Marlins struck in the bottom of the ninth, as Miller hit a single through the left side scoring Belgrave and earning the victory for Virginia Wesleyan.
 
Cam Cassady led in hitting during the second game for the Maroons, going 3-5 on the afternoon.  He also scored a team-high two runs.  Brian Kluge and Bradley Mattox had the other runs for Roanoke in the game.  Four different players finished the game with one RBI each.  Chad Hill was tabbed with the loss, after pitching in the bottom of the ninth inning and giving up one run.
 
Wesleyan's Jordan Miller led the Marlins in hitting, going 3-5 in the contest.  Bett Sutryk and Josh Miller finished the game with two hits.  Kenneth Belgrave led all players In scoring after crossing the plate three times.  Alex Tucci (4-4) pitched a complete game, allowing four runs off nine hits, while striking out nine batters.
 
The Maroons return to action on Monday, April 8th as they travel to take on Milligan College in non-conference action.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
