Roanoke Baseball Holds Off Southern Virginia, Wins 5-2 on Thursday
SALEM – The Roanoke College baseball team held off multiple scoring efforts by Southern Virginia University to pick up a 5-2 win in non-conference action on Thursday night.  The Maroons now have a record of 14-18, while the Knights have a mark of 17-12.

The Maroons are just three wins away from breaking the single season wins record (16), with five games to play in the regular season.  Roanoke has tallied 16 win seasons twice since the 2002 season, including a 16-21 mark in 2012.

Roanoke put runs on the board first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning.  Boonewell Hagy hit a sacrifice fly ball, plating Clark Crutchfield for the 1-0 advantage.  Two innings later, the Maroons would find twice the success.  Andrew Peterson hit an RBI double to left field, scoring Crutchfield again, while Hagy hit an RBI single up the middle, allowing Peterson to score as Roanoke took a 3-0 lead.

Southern Virginia started a rally of their own in the top of the sixth, as Tyler Cox hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Mitch Stevenson, while Trager Hintze doubled to the same spot in center field, plating Cox.  After the sixth inning, Roanoke held a narrow lead of 3-2.  But it would be in the bottom of the seventh were the Maroons widened the gap.  Bradley Mattox hit a sacrifice fly ball scoring Hagy.  On another out, this time on the ground, Gavin Pelletteri made his way home to give Roanoke the 5-2 lead.  The Maroons held off Southern Virginia for the next two innings to pick up the win over their non-conference opponent.

Five different Maroons finished with two hits each on the evening, while Clark Crutchfield was able to score a team-high two runs.  Boonewell Hagy topped all players in the contest with two RBIs.  Tim Demshar (1-0) was credited with the win, while Mark Wimmer picked up his first save of the season.

Four different Knights finished the contest with two hits, while Mitch Stevenson and Tyler Cox scored the lone runs for SVU.  Cox and Trager Hintze tallied one RBI each on the evening.  Tyler King (2-2) was tabbed with the loss after giving up three runs off eight hits in just five innings of play.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, April 13th as they face off against Bridgewater College in double-header action at Kiwanis field.   The event will serve as senior day as well for the six seniors on the squad.  First pitch is scheduled for approximately 12:00 PM.
