Maroons Hand Eagles First ODAC Loss, Split Games on Saturday
SALEM – The Roanoke College baseball team handed Bridgewater College its first ODAC loss of the season 11-6, but fell in the second game of the double header, 12-1.  The Maroons now have a record of 15-19; 7-10 ODAC, while the Eagles are now 24-9; 16-1 in ODAC play.
 
The Maroons jumped on the Eagles early, scoring two runs off errors in the bottom of the second inning, as Clark Crutchfield and Andrew Peterson crossed the plate in the frame.  Bridgewater responded quickly by scoring two runs in the top of the next inning, off a Bryan Sanderson two RBI single.
 
In the bottom of the inning, Roanoke reclaimed the lead as Mark Manthe hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Brian Kluge.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Maroons poured multiple runs across the plate.  Bradley Mattox reached on an error with the bases loaded, allowing Reece Kingery to score.  As the next batter, Mark Manthe hit an RBI single, plating both Cam Cassady and Kluge.  Crutchfield and Peterson hit RBI sacrifice fly balls to score two more runs, giving Roanoke five for the inning and an 8-2 lead. 
 
The Maroons would score one more in the sixth, but Bridgewater started to make a charge in the top of the seventh.  Sanderson opened the scoring with an RBI double to left field, scoring Nick Fulk.  The Eagles plated thee more runs in the frame, pulling within three, 9-6.  Roanoke plated two more in the bottom of the eighth on errors, taking the 11-6 lead that would hold as the final.
 
Jacob Clifton finished the game with a 3-4 mark with one run scored.  Mark Manthe and Andrew Peterson finished with three RBIs, while Brian Kluge led the team with three runs scored.  Cameron Holshouser was tabbed with the win, giving up zero runs and striking out one.
 
Bridgewater's Andrew Hacker led the team in hitting, going 3-4.  Six different players scored one run, while Jonathan Mason finished with three RBIs.
 
In the second game of the day, the Maroons had a little trouble getting out of the gate, while the Eagles posted four runs in the first five innings.  The Maroons lone run came from a solo home run from Jacob Clifton in the bottom of the fifth inning.  Bridgewater went on to score eight more runs over the final nine innings to defeat the Maroons 12-1.
 
Jacob Clifton had the lone run for the Maroons, while the only other hit came from Cody Craft.  Tyler Grouten was tabbed with the loss, after giving up seven runs in 5.2 innings, striking out two.
 
Bridgewater's Derek Walling hit 3-5 on the afternoon, to lead all players in hitting.  Nick Fulk, Jonathan Mason and Cavin Clyde each finished the game with two runs.  Robert Gallet pitched a complete game, giving up one run and striking out 11.
 
The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, April 17th as they host Lynchburg College for a single contest.  That game is scheduled for a 5:00 PM first pitch.
