Walk-off Home Run in 10th Gives Roanoke 4-3 Victory over Lynchburg

Walk-off Home Run in 10th Gives Roanoke 4-3 Victory over Lynchburg
SALEM – With a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Roanoke College baseball team defeated Lynchburg College, 4-3 on Thursday evening.  The Maroons now have a record of 16-19; 8-10 ODAC, while the Hornets are now 18-16-1; 8-9-1 in ODAC action.

With tonight's win, the Maroons tied the Roanoke College single-season wins record (16) as well as the single-season ODAC wins total (8) in school history.  The Maroons need to be in the top six to earn a spot in the ODAC Tournament.  There are currently three teams with an 8-10 record, Roanoke included.  The teams in the #5 and #6 spot, Washington & Lee and Lynchburg have records of 9-9 and 8-9-1, respectively.  If the Maroons can win both games against Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, they will have an ODAC record of 10-10 and will need to see how the two teams above finish on Saturday to see if they can make the ODAC tournament for the first time since 2004.

The Maroons opened the scoring in the second inning.  Mark Manthe and Clark Crutchfield led off with a single and a double, respectively.  After the bases were loaded off of a walk, Boonewell Hagy hit an RBI single, scoring Manthe.  After two innings, the Maroons led 1-0.

The Hornets scored the equalizer in the top of the fourth as the Maroons put up four walks in the inning, plating Dan Savage to tie the game at 1-1.  However Jacob McMillan struck out the final batter with the bases loaded to keep the game tied.  In the bottom of the inning, Reece Kingery reached base on a double to left, and was knocked in with a single by Cam Cassady.  After the fourth inning, the Maroons had reclaimed their one run lead, going up 2-1.

Lynchburg began to chip away at the Maroon lead after opening up with two batters reaching base on an error.  After a hit from Lincoln Evans and Michael Kenah, the Hornets scored Robert Tomasulo, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2.  Lynchburg went on to tie the game at 3-3, after Joe Rogers led off with a double, he was knocked in on a sacrifice fly ball from Patrick Harris.  After seven innings, the game was tied up at 3-3.

Neither team could put the other away in regulation, pushing the game into extra innings.  With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Jacob Clifton hit a walk off home run over the scoreboard in left center field, giving Roanoke the 4-3 victory.

Mark Manthe and Clark Crutchfield led the team in hitting, each going 2-5 on the evening.  Clifton led the team with half of the run production, crossing the plate twice on the night.  Boonewell Hagy finished the game with a team high two RBIs.  Austin Gregory, who entered the contest in the ninth, picked up the win, striking out two, after facing eight batters.

Lynchburg finished the contest with eight hits, as Evans, Kenah and Rogers all had two each.  Thierenger was tabbed with the loss, only pitching 0.2 innings, giving up the game winning run.

The Maroons return to action on Saturday, April 20th as they travel to take on Eastern Mennonite in the final ODAC doubleheader of the season.  The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
