Baseball Drops Two to Shenandoah in ODAC Twin Bill
WINCHESTER - The Roanoke College baseball team was tripped up by Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon, dropping two games in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action, 19-2 and 13-1. The Maroons now have a record of 1-4.

In the first game, both teams each had a three-up, three-down first inning. It was in the second inning where the Hornets pulled away. Dan Powers started the scoring with an RBI single, scoring JJ McDaniel on the play. Daniel Freshley and Lew Johnson each got RBIs in their at-bats, scoring two more runs for the Hornets. A two RBI double by Billy Arens capped the scoring in the third for the Hornets, as Shenandoah led 5-0 after the second inning. The Hornets scored eight more runs over the third, fifth and sixth innings, taking a 13-0 advantage.

Roanoke scored its runs in the top of the seventh inning. Cam Cassady singled through the left side for an RBI plating Collier Donald, loading the bases. Dan Irwin followed up with an RBI walk, allowing Jacob Clifton to score. After the top of the seventh, Roanoke trailed 13-2. Shenandoah scored its final six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, while holding off the Maroons through the ninth, as Roanoke fell 19-2 in the first game of the day.

Roanoke had just four hits in the first game, one each from Collier Donald, Kevin Oakey, Will Black and Cam Cassady. Cassady and Irwin picked up the team's two RBIs. Cameron Holshouser was tabbed with the loss, giving up eight runs off three hits, striking out one.

The Hornets had 16 hits, with Dan Powers leading the team going 4-5 in the game. Daniel Freshley and Lew Johnson led the team with three RBIs each. Vince Claudio picked up the win, pitching 6.2 innings, striking out six, giving up two runs.

In the second game, the Maroons got on the board first, scoring in top of the first inning. Dan Irwin reached base on an error, then followed up with a stolen base. Kevin Oakey hit an RBI single two batters later, plating Irwin from second base. After the top of the first, Roanoke led 1-0. Shenandoah answered in the bottom of the inning, as the Hornets had the bases loaded, when Michael Paul was hit by a pitch, scoring Arens from third. Daniel Freshley reached next on a fielder's choice, allowing JJ McDaniel to score on the play. After the first inning, Shenandoah led 2-1.

The Hornets widened the gap over the next four innings, as they scored 12 runs through the sixth. Shenandoah held Roanoke hitless from the second inning on, as Roanoke fell in game two, 12-1.

Kevin Oakey had the Maroons' lone hit of the game, while Dan Irwin scored Roanoke's one run. Jacob McMillan was tabbed with the loss, giving up six runs on four hits, while striking out three. Shenandoah was led by Dan Powers and Nolan Overby who each finished with two hits in the game. Michael Paul led the squad with three RBIs. Darrell Thompson picked up the win, giving up one run off of one hit, while striking out seven.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, March 2nd as they host Emory & Henry in ODAC action at Kiwanis field in Roanoke's home opener. The contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
