Maroons Rally Late, Fall to Emory & Henry 9-7 on Sunday
SALEM - The Roanoke College baseball team rallied in the ninth inning, but still fell to Emory & Henry, 9-7 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Sunday. The Maroons now have a record of 1-5, 0-3 ODAC, while the Wasps are 5-4, 3-0 in ODAC play.

Emory & Henry scored the first run of the game in the top of the second, with the bases loaded, Ben Barnett walked, which plated Connor Wise. After, two the Wasps led 1-0. Roanoke tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. After Jacob Clifton hit a double to lead off the inning, Hayden Lee hit an RBI double, allowing Clifton to score.

The Wasps scored one run each in the top of the fourth an fifth innings, plating runs on a sacrifice fly from Brett Johnson and a home run from Caleb Rotton, respectively. After the fifth inning, Emory & Henry had a 3-1 lead. In the top of the sixth, the Wasps had the bases loaded with one out. Jordan Woullard hit a sacrifice fly, which caused Brogan Hoover and Barnett to score on the play. Johnson scored on an error during the next at bat, while Caleb Rotton scored on an RBI triple from Christopher. After the top of the sixth, the Wasps had a 7-1 advantage.

The Maroons cut the deficit in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and second, Clifton hit an RBI double allowing Will Decker to cross the plate. Entering the seventh inning, Roanoke trailed 7-2. Emory & Henry scored two more runs in the top of the ninth, but the Maroons weren't out of it yet. Roanoke's first three batters reached base, followed by Danny Creel who hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Lee from third. With the bases still loaded, Decker hit a grand slam two batters later, netting four RBIs and pulling the Maroons within two, 9-7. However, the Maroons couldn't close the gap as Emory & Henry picked up the win in the ODAC contest, 9-7.

Roanoke finished the game with 15 hits to Emory & Henry's eight. Jacob Clifton and Bradley Mattox led the team with three hits each, while Will Decker and Hayden Lee followed with two apiece. Decker led the team with four RBIs after his grand slam in the ninth inning, while also scoring a team high two runs. John Ruhlman was tabbed with the loss, giving up three runs off five hits, while striking out four.

Emory & Henry was led by Bransen Christopher who went 3-for-5 on the day. Five different players finished with one hit each. Jordan Woullard led the tam with two RBIs, while Caleb Rotton and Connor Wise each tallied two runs apiece. Matthew McInaw picked up the win, pitching six innings, giving up two runs on nine hits.

The Maroons return to action on March 4th as they play at Averett University. That game is scheduled for a 2:00 PM start.
