Baseball Splits Twin Bill With Hampden-Sydney on Sunday
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY - The Roanoke College baseball team split a pair of games against Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. The Maroons won the first game 13-6, while the Tigers took the second game of the twin-bill, 12-2. Roanoke now has a record of 3-7, 1-4 in the conference, while Hampden-Sydney has a mark of 12-3, 1-1 in ODAC play.

In the first contest, Hampden-Sydney got on the board first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The runs came after Nathan Chamberlin hit a three run home run to left field, picking up three RBIs in the process. Roanoke tied the game up over the next two innings. In the second inning, after Will Decker doubled, Kevin Oakey came up as the next batter, also doubling while plating Decker. In the top of the third, with runners on first and third, Will Black stole second, then took third on an error, while Mattox took home from third. Black also found the plate in the inning to tie the game up at 3-3 after the top of the third.

Chamberlin knocked one out of the park again in the bottom of the third, this time scoring two runs on the play. The Maroons trailed by two until the top of the sixth, where Roanoke got the bats going. With two runners on, Oakey hit an RBI single, plating Collier Donald on the play. Two batters later, Hayden Lee reached on an error, allowing Oakey and Decker to both score. Devin Cassity hit a two RBI single with two outs,, bringing home Lee and Dan Irwin, as Roanoke held an 8-5 lead after the top of the sixth inning. The Tigers' Wiles hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, plating Lee Carneal. Entering the seventh inning, Roanoke led by two, 8-6.

In the top of the seventh, the Maroons scored two more runs. Jacob Clifton hit an RBI double, scoring Collier Donald. While three batters later, Irwin hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Clifton. Roanoke scored three more in the top of the ninth as Irwin scored on an error, then Mattox Hit a two RBI single scoring Devn Cassity and Lee. At the end of the contest, Roanoke won game one, 13-6.

Bradley Mattox, Will Black and Collier Donald all finished with three hits, while Jacob Clifton and Will Decker tallied two each. Mattox led the team in RBIs with three, while Black knocked in two runs. Mattox, Clifton and Will Decker, Hayden Lee and Devin Cassity each tallied two runs. Austin Gregory picked up the win with five innings pitched, striking out three, while only giving up one runs on six hits.

In the first game, Hunter Lewis led the Tigers with three hits, while Wiles and Chamberlin finished with two apiece. Chamberlin led the team with five RBIs off two home runs, while he crossed the plate for a team high two runs. Billy Nixon was tabbed with the loss, giving up eight runs in six innings off 10 hits.

The Maroons had a harder time finding the plate in the second game. Hampden-Sydney scored a run early in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Roanoke tied the game up in the top of the third, as Collier Donald reached on a fielder's choice, picking up an RBI as Devin Cassity scored on an error. In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers' Jack Elliot tallied an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After three, Hampden-Sydney led by one, 2-1.

The Maroons tied the game again in the top of the fifth as Will Black hit an RBI single, plating Mattox on the play. Hampden-Sydney answered in the bottom of the frame with a Jeff Gray two run home run, going ahead 4-2. The Tigers created distance between the teams after a seven run sixth inning, where Hampden-Sydney finished with six hits. The tigers scored two more run in the bottom of the seventh as Christian Hamlett grounded out, while Wiles crossed the plate. The Tigers picked up the win in the second game, 12-2.

Mattox led the team in the second game with three hits, going 3-4 in the contest. Five other Maroons tallied one hit each in the game. Mattox and Cassity scored one run each for Roanoke as well. Will Black and Collier Donald finished with one RBI apiece. Zach Hamilton was tabbed with the loss after giving up two runs in the fifth.

For the Tigers, Jeff gray went 4-5 with two runs scored. Christian Hamlett batted 3-4 with three runs scored. Wiles also scored three runs for the Tigers on a 3-4 afternoon. Hunter Lewis pitched a complete game for the Tigers, giving up just two runs off eight hits, striking out three.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, March 11th as they play host to Stevenson University. That game will be played under the lights at Kiwanis with a 7:00 PM start time.
