Baseball Rallies Late, Falls to Stevenson 10-8 on Tuesday
SALEM - The Roanoke College baseball team fell in non-conference action to Stevenson University on Tuesday, 10-8, under the lights at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons now have a record of 2-8, while the Mustangs sit with a mark of 4-0.

The Mustangs got on the board first with a two out RBI single from Scott Merkel, scoring Kevin Wu on the play. After one, Stevenson led 1-0. In the top of the second inning, Nick Peifer led off with a solo home run to grow the Mustang lead to 2-0. Stevenson piled on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning as well. After a pair of walks, Bret Schilling hit an RBI single that plated Davis Grove. Two batters later, Tom Goulian hit an RBI single scoring Peifer on the play. Through the top of the fourth, the Mustangs had built a 4-0 lead.

However, the Maroons came charging back in the bottom of the fourth. Hayden Lee hit an RBI double that brought Will Decker home from second base. Next up, Devin Cassity hit an RBI single, as Kevin Oakey scored from third. Mattox poured on another run with a sacrifice hit allowing Lee to score, and bringing the Maroons within one, 4-3.

The Mustangs found themselves with an opportunity in the seventh inning as Ben Hallam walked with the bases loaded to bring Goulian across the plate. Still with the bases loaded, Merkel hit an RBI single through the right field, scoring Wu. Grove came up next with a sacrifice fly as Troy Miller scored the third run of the game, putting Stevenson ahead 7-3. The Mustangs tacked on three more in the top of the eighth with a triple from Wu, an RBI single from Miller and an RBI double by Merkel, extending the lead to seven, 10-3.

But, the Maroons weren't out of the contest yet. With two outs, the Maroons loaded the bases after Will Black hit an RBI infield single, scoring Boonewell Hagy. With the bases loaded, Jacob Clifton walked and Will Decker was hit by a pitch, scoring two more runs as Roanoke now trailed 10-6. Clark Crutchfield singled next to left field for an RBI while Donald scored on the play. Hagy reached base on a walk, as Clifton crossed the plate, but with two outs, the next batter flew out to the outfield, ending the rally.

That would be the last bit of scoring for either team as Roanoke fell 10-8 to Stevenson in non-conference action.

Five Maroons finished with two hits on the night, including Will Black, Collier Donald, Clark Crutchfield, Hayden Lee and Devin Cassity. Eight different Maroons crossed the plate for one run each. Similarly, seven different players tabbed one RBI apiece. Harrison Richards was tabbed with the loss, pitching four innings, giving up four runs off five hits, while striking out three batters.

For the Mustangs, Scott Merkel went four for five on the evening, with three RBIs. Kevin Wu went just one-for-two, but crossed the plate a team high three times. Alec Romanowski earned the win, pitching six innings and giving up three runs, while striking out seven.

The Maroons return to action on Wednesday, March 12th as they host Greensboro College for another night game at Kiwanis Field. The first pitch is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start.
