Baseball Sweeps Peace at Kiwanis on Saturday
SALEM - The Roanoke College baseball team swept William Peace University on Saturday afternoon, winning both games of the twin bill 5-2 (9 inn.) and 9-4. The Maroons now have a record of 4-8, while the Pacers sit with a mark of 4-7.

William Peace put the Maroons on the ropes early in the first contest, putting up two runs in the first inning. Jacob Ennis, as the second batter, reached base on a fielding error, as Devon Dye was able to score on the play. Greg Chauvin was able to score next on a passed ball. After the first inning, Peace led over the Maroons, 2-0.

Roanoke tied the game in the bottom of the sixth as Will Decker hit a two RBI single up the middle, plating Collier Donald and Will Black on the play. The tie held through the seven innings of regulation and spanned through to the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Hayden Lee hit a three run, walk off home run to capture the victory for Roanoke, 5-2.

Eight different Maroons finished the first game with one hit each, while five separate players tallied one run apiece. Hayden Lee led the team in RBIs with three after his home run on the afternoon. Will Decker tallied Roanoke's other two RBIs off of his single in the sixth. Austin Gregory picked up the victory in the first game, giving up just two hits, and striking out two of the eight batters he faced.

JT Howington and Tyler Klinedinst each finished the game with two hits each for Peace. Dalton Dye and Greg Chauvin each finished the game with one run apiece. Jacob Ennis had the lone RBI for the team in the first game. Christian Neal was tabbed with the loss in game one, giving up three runs off three hits, while striking out five in 2.2 innings of work.

In the second game, the Maroons took it to the Pacers first, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. Jacob Clifton hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Collier Donald. Peace answered in the top of the second inning as Chase Roupp hit an RBI single up the middle, scoring JT Howington and tying the game at 1-1. Roupp brought two more runners home in the top of the fourth inning, as he hit a two RBI single, scoring Howington again along with Josh Clark. After the top of the fourth, Roanoke trailed Peace 3-1.

The bottom of the fourth was a big inning for the Maroons. With one out, Jacob Clifton hit a solo home run to bring the Maroons within one, 3-2. Three batters later, with the bases loaded, Lee hit a two RBI double scoring Nowlin and Decker and putting Roanoke ahead 4-3. Bradley Mattox had an RBI bunt that scored Danny Creel, followed by Mattox stealing second so Lee could use the distraction to score the fifth run of the inning. After four, Roanoke led 6-3.

The Pacers scored with two outs in the top of the fifth as Josh Clark hit an RBI double down the left field line as Nanney made his way home on the play. After the top of the fifth, Roanoke led 6-4. In the bottom of the fifth, Jacob Clifton hit an RBI triple to left center field scoring Donald. The next batter, Decker, grounded out to the infield, but picked up the RBI as Clifton crossed home. The Maroons scored once more in the bottom of the sixth, as Cassity stole second base, allowing Mattox to score from third. That would be Roanoke's final run of the game as the Maroons defeated the Pacers 9-4 in game two.

Clifton led the Maroons in hitting going 3-3, just a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Six other players on the team finished with one hit each. Collier Donald and Clifton led the team with two runs scored, while Clifton also had a game high three RBIs. Jacob McMillan earned the win, going four innings while giving up four runs off three hits and striking out three. Rawlings Cumbea got the save with three innings of work, striking out six batters.

For the Pacers, Chase Roupp had a team high two hits in the game. JT Howington scored two of the team's four runs, while Roupp also led the team in RBIs with three. Roup was tabbed with the loss, giving up eight runs off eight hits, striking out four.

The Maroons return to action on Sunday, March 16th as they take on Emory & Henry on the road. That contest is scheduled for a 2:00 PM first pitch.
