Maroons Sweep Three Game Series With Ferrum with 10-6 Win
FERRUM - The Roanoke College baseball team defeated Ferrum College, 10-6 on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.  The Maroons now have a record of 9-11, while the Panthers sit with a mark of 17-10.
 
The Maroons swept the series between these two teams, playing three games over the course of the last few weeks.  Roanoke won the first game at a neutral site, Virginia Tech, by the score of 15-5.  Ferrum then came to Salem on March 27th, where the Maroons won again, this time by the score of 16-5.  Roanoke took the third game of the series tonight, 10-6.  The Maroons are now on a  four game win-streak.
 
The Maroons got the bats moving in the top of the first, as Will Decker hit into a fielder's choice, netting an RBI after Devin Cassity scored for the first run of the game.  As Decker stole second base, Will Black came around to score the second run of the game for the Maroons.  Still in the top of the first, Kevin Oakey hit an RBI single to left field, plating Decker on the play as Roanoke led 3-0 after the top of the first frame.  Roanoke added one more run in the top of the second as Jacob Clifton hit an RBI sacrifice fly, allowing Danny Creel to score for the Maroons.
 
In the bottom of the second, Matt Reynolds hit an RBI double, putting the Panthers on the board after Talyor Davis scored.  Ferrum kept the runs coming in the bottom of the fifth as Adam Duncan and Ty Comer hit RBI singles to the outfield, tallying three runs in the process.  After five innings, the teams were tied at 4-4.  Ferrum took a two run lead in the sixth after Lane Deaver hit an RBI triple, plating Casey Naff.  Clay Massey followed with an infield out, while Deaver made his way home from third.  After six, Roanoke trailed 6-4 to Ferrum.
 
The Maroons weren't out of the game though as they came rolling back over the final three innings.  Decker hit an RBI single to left, scoring Cassity to start a big comeback in the top of the seventh.  In the top of the eighth Cassity hit an infield RBI single, scoring Collier Donald.  Cam Cassady scored on an error during Will Black's at-bat, giving the Maroons their eighth run of the game.   Black also scored in the eighth after another sacrifice fly by Clifton.  Roanoke's final run came from Donald, who made his way home after an RBI single from Cam Cassady.  The Maroons picked up the third win of the series with a 10-6 victory.
 
Roanoke was led in hitting by Devin Cassity, Kevin Oakey and Collier Donald who each finished with two hits.  Cassity led the team in runs with three, while Will Black and Donald tallied two apiece.  Black, Clifton and Will Decker also had team highs in RBIs with two.  Michael Mares earned the win one inning of pitching, coming in during the seventh.
 
The Panthers tallied seven hits by seven different players.  Casey Naff led the team in scoring with two runs, while four other players had one run each.  Adam Duncan led the team in RBIs with two on the evening. Marquis Johnson was tabbed with the loss, giving up four runs in just 1.2 innings of work, while striking out four.
 
The Maroons return to action on Thursday, April 3rd as they host Southern Virginia University at Kiwanis Field.  That game is scheduled for a 7:00 PM first pitch.
