Maroons Fall to Averett On Wednesday in Non-Conference Game
SALEM - The Roanoke College baseball team fell in non-conference action to Averett University on Wednesday.  The Maroons now have an overall record of 11-15, while the Cougars improve their mark to 13-16 on the season.

The Cougars had a successful first inning as they put three runs up on the Maroons.  Andrew Davies and Chatham Currie each hit RBI singles through the left side in consecutive at-bats, giving the Cougars an early 2-0 lead.  Currie was followed by Jason Carter who netted an RBI off of a fielder's choice, as Timothy Coston took advantage of the play and scored the Cougars' third run.

Roanoke responded quickly in the bottom of the inning as Jacob Clifton hit a two-run shot over the wall, scoring Will Black and pulling the Maroons within one, 3-2.  Averett's Davies hit a home run of his own in the top of the third to widen the lead to two, 4-2.  Over the next three innings Averett's lead grew to 9-2 as the Cougars scored four five more runs through the top of the fifth.

Roanoke went to work in the bottom of the fifth, as Clifton hit his second, two-run home run, picking up his fourth RBI and pulling the Maroons within five, 9-4.  Kevin Oakey went on in the same inning to hit an RBI single to left field, scoring Will Decker on the play.  After five, Roanoke trailed by just four, 9-5.  However, Roanoke would score just one more run in the bottom of the eighth as Devin Cassity hit an RBI single with the bases loaded allowing Lucas Nowlin to cross the plate.  Roanoke would fall just an inning later to Averett University, 9-6 on Wednesday.

The Maroons were led in hitting by Jacob Clifton, Kevin Oakey and Lucas Nowlin, who each tallied two hits in the game.  Jacob Clifton led the team in RBIs with four, while scoring two runs, tying Will Black for a team high.  Seth Bradley was tabbed with the loss, giving up three runs in the first inning of play.  Roanoke pitched by committee on the evening, tallying seven strike-outs amongst the pitching staff on Wednesday night.

The Cougars were led in hitting by Andrew Davies, who went 3-3 on the night, tallying two RBIs and one runs cored.  Cody More and Hunter Ashworth each finished with two runs, while four different batters amassed two RBIs each. Travis Coates picked up the win for the Cougars after 4.2 innings of work, giving up five runs.
