Baseball Scores 29 in Double Header with Johnson University
SALEM - In two games, the Roanoke College baseball team put up 29 runs against opponent Johnson University on Saturday, winning 8-0 and 21-7. The Maroons are now 5-6 on the season, while the Royals are 1-8 on the season.

Roanoke's 21 runs in the second game is the second highest run total for the Maroons in a single game. Roanoke defeated Lake Erie in 2004 by the score of 23-0. The Maroons have scored 21 runs on two other occasions, once in 2013 against Maine-Presque Isle and once in 2004 against Plattsburgh State.

In the first game, Roanoke's eight runs came from the first three innings of play. The Maroons put up three runs in the bottom of the second. Collier Donald scored the first run off of a Gavin Pellitteri double to left center field. Pellitteri scored his own run after Will Black hit an RBI single through the right side. Devin Cassity scored the third run after Sean Guida knocked a single to right field. After the second inning, Roanoke led 3-0.

The Maroons put up five more runs in the bottom of the third. Lucas Nowlin crossed the plate on a Donald single, while Donald and Pellitteri scored on a sacrifice fly ball to right field for Will Black. Devin Cassity scored his second run of the game from a Guida double. Guida would then score after Will Decker hit a single through the left side. The teams would go scoreless for the remaining four innings, as Roanoke picked up the 8-0 win.

Roanoke finished the game with 11 hits, led by Will Black with three. Sean Guida, Collier Donald and Gavin Pelliteri tallied two hits apiece. Black and Guida finished with two RBIs each, leading the team in the category. John Ruhlman earned the win, pitching five innings and striking out nine batters in the victory.

Johnson finished the game with five hits, with five different batters earning one hit each. The Royals' pitcher, McCoig was tabbed with the loss, giving up seven runs off seven hits in 2.1 innings of play. He struck out one batter in the effort.

The Maroons scored in all six innings in which they batted. The Royals put up one run in top of the first, but Roanoke answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. The Maroosn went on to core three runs in the bottom of the second, with Kevin Oakey hitting a two RBI single to left, while Drew Mikula also hit an RBI single to left. After two, Roanoke led 4-1.

Johnson briefly took the lead, scoring four runs in the top of the third, taking a 5-4 advantage. The Maroons tied the game at 5-5 after Brian Kluge scored on a sacrifice fly ball. Johnson put up two more runs in the top of the fourth. It would be the bottom of the fourth that would break things open for the Maroons. Roanoke scored nine runs in the inning, which saw six hits and two errors. Early errors in the inning put runners on the base paths for the Maroons, and turned into a 14-7 advantage.

After just facing three batters in the top of the fifth, Roanoke went on to score six more runs in the bottom of the fifth. After five, Roanoke now led by 14, 20-7. The Maroons final run came in the bottom of the sixth, as Danny Pugh hit an RBI single through the right side, allowing Dan Irwin to score. After six and a half innings of play, Roanoke picked up the 21-7 victory.

The Maroons had 18 players enter the contest in the second game of the day. Roanoke put up 20 hits, led by Craig Kiley, Kevin Oakey and Dan Brodeur, with three hits apiece. Ross Strickland, Brodeur, Brian Kluge, and Matt Sedlock led the team with three runs each. Brodeur also finished the game with four RBIs, while Kluge had three stolen bases.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, March 24th as they host William Peace University at Lewis Gale Field. That contest is scheduled for a 4:00 PM first pitch.
