Baseball Sweeps #10 Randolph-Macon on Senior Day
SALEM - The Roanoke College baseball team took two games from #10 ranked Randolph-Macon, as the Maroons celebrated Senior Day on Sunday. The Maroons now have a record of 13-7, 8-3 in the ODAC, while the Yellow Jackets are 17-6, 8-6 in ODAC play.

The pair of wins on Sunday mark the biggest wins for the Roanoke College baseball program, as the Maroons had not beaten a top-10 team, let alone sweeping the opponent in the process. With the pair of wins, Roanoke moves ahead of Randolph-Macon in the ODAC standings, taking third place entering the final two weeks of regular season play. The Maroons have won their last eight straight ODAC contests, after starting out 0-3 to the season.

The Maroons also celebrated Senior Day, recognizing six players who have helped make Roanoke baseball a successful program. The senior class of Gavin Pellitteri, Chad Hill, Brian Kluge, Danny Creel, Cameron Holshouser and Austin Gregory have won 63 games, including 32 ODAC victories. They also took the Maroons to the ODAC Tournament for the first time since 2004, during the 2013 season. In the 2013 season as well, the Maroons tied the program record for wins with 18, and ODAC wins with 10.

Roanoke blanked #10 Randolph-Macon in the opening contest of Easter Sunday. The Maroons led off with a pair of singles by Will Black and Kluge, putting Will black on third. Craig Kiley hit into a double play, but it allowed Black to score, taking a 1-0 lead. Collier Donald picked up an RBI in the second inning as he hit one off the pitcher, bringing in Cal Hodgert from second. After two innings, Roanoke led 2-0.

The Maroons continued to score in the bottom of the third. With two runners on, Cal Hodgert hit a double to center field, plating both Kiley and Black. Will Decker came up as the next batter, hitting a big triple that scored Hodgert. Roanoke built a 5-0 lead in three innings. Roanoke's final run came in the bottom of the sixth as Donald hit a solo home run over the left field wall. The Maroons kept the Yellow Jackets scoreless through the remainder of the contest, picking up the 6-0 victory.

John Ruhlman pitched 7.1`innings for the Maroons, striking out nine batters in the process. He only gave up four hits. Chad Hill played the remaining 1.2, giving up only one hit. Craig Kiley, Cal Hodgert and Collier Donald all finished with two hits, while Will Black and Hodgert led the team in runs scored with two apiece.

The Yellow Jackets had five hits in the first game, with Nick Maiolo tallying three. James Walsh was tabbed with the loss, pitching six innings, giving up six runs off nine hits.

Randolph-Macon struck first in the second game of the day. Stuart Brown hit an RBI single to right, scoring Cole Migliorini to take a 1-0 lead. Roanoke answered with a run in the bottom third, as with two runners on, Clark Crutchfield hit an RBI single to right center, scoring Will Black to tie the game.

After three scoreless innings, Roanoke took the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Cal Hodgert hit a triple to left field, scoring Dan Brodeur from first, who was pinch running for Clark Crutchfield. Devin Cassity later hit a single to left field, bringing home Hodgert. After six, Roanoke led 3-1. Randolph-Macon cut into the deficit, as Nick Maiolo hit a solo home run to left, pulling within one, 3-2.

However, the Maroons ran away with the contest in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Will Black took a walk, scoring Donald. Brian Kluge hit a single next to score Anthony Teixeira. Kiley hit a double to left center field, nearly clearing the wall, picking up two RBIs by scoring Black and Cassity. Kluge would later score on a passed ball, while Will Decker hit a sacrifice fly ball to plate Kiley. Roanoke scored six runs in the bottom of the eight. Roanoke would hold off Randolph-Macon in the final half inning to win 9-2.

Cal Hodgert and Brian Kluge led the team with three hits each. Will Black and Collier Donald finished with two apiece. Black led the team in runs scored, crossing the plate twice, while seven other players scored once each. The Senior pair of Cameron Holshouser and Austin Gregory combined for the win and the save, respectively. Holshouser pitched 7.0 innings, giving up one run off five hits, striking out seven. Gregory also gave up one run off two hits, striking out four batters in two innings.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Cole Migliorini and Nate Meiners with two hits each. Rick Spiers was tabbed with the loss, giving up three runs off nine hits in 5.2 innings.

The Maroons return to action on Tuesday, April 7th as they travel to take on North Carolina Wesleyan. That contest is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start..
