Baseball’s Record Breaking 23-Win Season ends in a Split with Bridgewater

SALEM, Va. – Roanoke's 2016 season came to an end on Saturday afternoon after splitting a doubleheader with Bridgewater. The Maroons finished seventh in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference just missing the six-team ODAC Tournament. Despite missing the tournament, this year's team broke the school record in wins with 23 where the previous record was 19.

The Basics – Game One
Score: Bridgewater 9, Roanoke 5
Records: Roanoke 22-17 (9-10 ODAC), Bridgewater 21-16 (11-8 ODAC)
Location: BC Baseball Field – Bridgewater, Va.
 
The Lead: Despite out hitting Bridgewater by three hits, Roanoke fell 9-5 due to a six-run fifth inning by the Eagles.                                                                                                                                                                                                                
 
How it Happened:

  • Bridgewater scratched across a run in the bottom of the first inning to give them an early 1-0 edge.
  • In the top of the third inning, Clark Crutchfield singled to left field to score Will Black who reached via a walk tying the score up 1-1.
  • The Eagles responded in its half of the third inning, taking advantage of an RC error to score one run giving them a 2-1 advantage.
  • Bridgewater used timely hitting to push across six runs in the bottom of the fifth off of three hits and one Roanoke error making the score 8-1.
  • Will Decker hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to narrow Bridgewater's lead to 8-2.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, Crutchfield doubled over the centerfielder's head to score Craig Kiley and Anthony Teixeira who both reached on hits earlier in the inning. Bridgewater was able to score one more run in the bottom of the eighth making the score 9-4.
  • In the top of the ninth, Teixeira singled down the left field line to score Sean Guida, but the Maroons came up short in the final inning and fell 9-5.
  • John Ruhlma'n was saddled with the loss for Roanoke throwing 4.2 innings and giving up five earned runs. Steven Woerner picked up his fifth win of the year throwing 7.1 innings and giving up four runs.
  •  At the plate for RC, Teixeira went 3-for-5 with one RBI and one stolen base. Crutchfield was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a double while Decker was also 2-for-4 with a home run.

 


 
The Basics – Game Two
Score: Roanoke 6, Bridgewater 1
Records: Roanoke 23-17 (10-10 ODAC), Bridgewater 21-17 (11-9 ODAC)
Location: BC Baseball Field – Bridgewater, Va.
 
The Lead: Roanoke used several pitchers to hold Bridgewater to just one run off of seven hits to win 6-1.            
 
How it Happened:

  • Bridgewater began the scoring scratching across one run off of two hits and one Roanoke error in the bottom of the third inning.
  • In the top of the fifth, Roanoke collected back-to-back home runs from Connor Lilley and Dan Brodeur making the score 2-1.
  • With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Lilley forced a walk to score Teixeira who walked earlier in the inning. In the next at bat, Brodeur singled through the left side to score Crutchfield who singled earlier in the inning. Dean Hermanson continued the Maroons rally with a single of his own to score Drew Mikula.
  • In the top of the seventh, Crutchfield doubled to the left-centerfield gap to put himself in scoring position for RC. Mikula singled up the middle to score Crutchfield giving Roanoke the 6-1 final.
  • At the plate, Crutchfield went 2-for-3 for RC with one double and two runs scored. Brodeur was also 2-for-3 with two RBI while MIkula also earned two hits for the Maroons. Lilley collected two RBI for Roanoke and also hit his first home run in his collegiate career.
  • Kenny Mackovic started the game on the mound for Roanoke throwing four innings while scattering three hits and only giving up one unearned run. Nick Raulin earned the win throwing three innings and just giving up two hits while striking out four. Kiley threw the remaining two innings striking out six batters.
