Baseball Breaks School Record for Wins with 19, Splits with Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday
The Basics - Game One
Score: Virginia Wesleyan 7, Roanoke 6 (10 innings)
Records: Roanoke 18-12 (7-6 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan 16-8 (10-4 ODAC)
Location: Kiwanis Field - Salem, Va.

The Lead: Virginia Wesleyan scratched across one run each in the eighth, ninth and tenth innings to slip past Roanoke 8-7 in 10 innings.

How it Happened:
  • The Marlins jumped on the board first in the first inning after Taylor Erby singled through the left side to score Justin Erby.
  • Roanoke responded in the bottom of the first due to a sacrifice fly from Clark Crutchfield that would score Sean Guida tying the score 1-1.
  • RC pushed across three runs in the bottom of the third after a trio of consecutive doubles by Guida, Anthony Teixeira and Craig Kiley would score two runs. Crutchfield singled to left center to score Kiley giving RC a 4-1 advantage.
  • In the top of the fifth, VWC used three hits to score three runs and nod the score up 4-4.
  • Will Decker hit a two-RBI single up the middle to score Scott Ellis and Guida giving Roanoke a 6-4 lead.
  • Virginia Wesleyan responded in the final two innings scoring one run in the eighth and the ninth to tie the score 6-6. In the top of the tenth the Marlins were able to scratch across one more run giving them the 7-6 lead and outcome.
  • Nik Milvo led Virginia Wesleyan offensively going 4-for-5 at the plate while on the mound Austin Hammond picked up the win after throwing the ninth inning and Nick Ott recorded his first save of the year after throwing a scoreless tenth inning.
  • Guida, Teixeira and Ellis all went 2-for-5 at the plate while Kiley, Crutchfield and Decker all earned two RBI.
  • On the mound for Roanoke, John Ruhlman earned a quality start throwing six innings while only giving up three earned runs and striking out eight.

The Basics - Game Two
Score: Roanoke 3, Virginia Wesleyan 0
Records: Roanoke 19-12 (8-6 ODAC), Virginia Wesleyan 16-9 (10-5 ODAC)

The Lead: Roanoke bounced back to take game two 3-0 and capture the school record for most wins in a season at 19 due to a strong pitching performance from Rawlings Cumbea.

How it Happened:
  • In the bottom of the third inning, Collier Donald got things started after walking to start off the inning.
  • Scott Ellis advanced him to second base with a sacrifice bunt, and later in the inning Will Black would hit an RBI single to score Donald making the score 1-0.
  • With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Ellis laid down another sacrifice bunt down the first base line that was fumbled by the VWC pitcher allowing Eli Sumpter to score from third.
  • In the next at bat, Guida hit a ground ball to second base that allowed Teixeira to score giving RC the 3-0 edge.
  • Harrison Richards threw the last two innings of the game to collect his first save of the year and complete the shutout for the Maroons.
  • Cumbea earned his third win of the year and threw seven shutout innings for Roanoke only allowing four hits while striking out seven batters.
  • Offensively, Guida and Black collected one hit and one RBI each while Guida also picked up a stolen base.
