The Lead: Roanoke used an eight-run sixth inning to defeat Averett in a slugfest that saw 28 combined runs.

How it Happened:
  • Roanoke struck first in the top of the first inning after Anthony Teixeira doubled into the right field gap to score Sean Guida. Later in the inning Clark Crutchfield singled through the left side to score Teixeira giving RC the 2-0 early advantage.
  • In the top of the second inning, the Maroons would score two more runs. Guida singled to score Dan Brodeur who reached base earlier in the inning on a single. Later in the inning, Will Decker collected a single of his own to score Scott Ellis from third base.
  • Averett responded by tying the score up 4-4 in the bottom of the second inning that included a three-run home run by Drew Evans.
  • The Cougars rallied again in the bottom of the fourth to score eight runs off of five hits that included another three-run home run by Evans.
  • Roanoke was able to peck away at the 12-4 Averett lead in the top of the fifth after Eli Sumpter and Brodeur crossed the plate only putting the Maroons down 12-6.
  • In the top of the sixth, Roanoke's offense exploded for eight runs. Decker would reach base on an error to start the inning and in the next at bat Crutchfield doubled in the left field gap to score him.
  • Drew Mikula belted a double of his own to trade places with Crutchfield making the score 12-8. Mikula later scored in the inning after Sumpter, Collier Donald and Brodeur forced three consecutive walks to push him across.
  • With the bases loaded and one out, Guida lined out to centerfield, but Sumpter was able to tag up from third base and score. In the next at bat, Brodeur stole second base and forced an errant throw from the Averett catcher, which allowed Donald to score from third base only putting the Maroons down 12-11.
  • Decker continued the Roanoke two-out rally with a two-RBI double over the center fielder's head that scored Teixeira and Brodeur. Crutchfield capped off RC's sixth inning outburst with his second double of the inning that just missed clearing the fence to score Decker giving Roanoke a 14-12 lead.
  • The Cougars would scratch across one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Roanoke responded in the top of the ninth inning after a double by Donald scored Sumpter giving Roanoke the 15-13 lead and eventual outcome.
  • Crutchfield led Roanoke at the plate going 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBI. Decker also earned three RBI after collecting two hits including one double. Brodeur and Teixeira also added two hits for the Maroons.
  • For Averett, Evans went 4-for-5 at the plate with three home runs, seven RBI and three runs scored.
  • On the mound, Diego Meneses picked up his second win of the year. Sumpter collected his fifth save of the year, which ties him for the most saves in a single season and is a record that has stood outright for eight years.
