Roanoke Defeats Greensboro 10-5 on Wednesday Night

The Lead: Roanoke used a three-run fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead and didn't look back, defeating Greensboro 10-5.

How it Happened:
  • Greensboro struck early in the first inning scoring two runs off of two hits to take an early 2-0 lead.
  • Roanoke cut the lead in half to 2-1 after Drew Mikula grounded out to the shortstop, but Sean Guida was still able to score from third.
  • The Pride were able to push across two more runs in the top of the second inning, extending their lead to 4-1 after taking advantage of two Roanoke errors in that inning.
  • The Maroons responded and scored one more run in the bottom of the second inning after Eli Sumpter tagged up from third on a fly ball hit to center field that was hit by Collier Donald
  • RC scored one more run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Will Decker stole second base and Sumpter was able to score from third on the throw down narrowing the margin 4-3.
  • Greensboro scratched across another run in the top of the fifth to extend its lead to 5-3, but Roanoke responded scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth giving them the 6-5 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Guida singled to lead off the inning. In the next at bat, Anthony Teixeira doubled down the left field line to score Guida from first base.
  • Later in the inning Clark Crutchfield doubled to left field to score Teixeira and move Mikula to third base. Several at bats later, Donald singled to score Mikula giving RC a 9-5 advantage.
  • Roanoke was able to collect one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning after a Craig Kiley double scored Guida who reached on a walk earlier in the inning to make the score 10-5.
  • Crutchfield went 4-for-5 at the plate for Roanoke with a double and an RBI. Guida was 3-for-3 on the day with one double, two walks and four runs scored.
  • On the mound for RC Kenny Mackovic picked up the win to improve to 4-0 this year after throwing 3.1 innings and only giving up one earned run in relief. Chance Henry earned the save throwing four innings while only giving up two hits and no runs.
