The Lead: After dropping the first game of the double header yesterday, Roanoke bounced back and used 13 hits to win 7-3.

How it Happened:
  • Roanoke exploded in the first inning, scoring four runs. Will Black got the action started with a single and stole second immediately after. In the next at bat, Will Decker doubled to score Black giving RC the 1-0 lead.
  • Craig Kiley singled to score Decker bringing up Dan Brodeur to the plate. Brodeur laid down a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by the third basemen, which put Brodeur at second and Kiley at third for the Maroons.
  • Later in the inning Eli Sumpter singled to drive in both Kiley and Brodeur giving RC the early 4-0 lead.
  • In the second inning, Hampden-Sydney drove across its only run that they would score off of Roanoke pitcher John Ruhlman making the score 4-1.
  • Anthony Teixeira singled to begin the top of the fourth inning and was able to work his way around the bases, taking advantage of Hampden-Sydney miscues to add another run to RC's lead.
  • Roanoke added two more runs to its lead in the fifth inning after Brodeur crossed the plate because of an error and Scott Ellis scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Teixeira giving the Maroons a 7-1 cushion.
  • Hampden-Sydney rallied in the ninth inning scoring two runs, but Sumpter was able to halt the Tiger's rally by striking out the final batter.
  • Black led RC offensively going 4-for-5 at the plate with a stolen base and a run scored. Kiley went 3-for-5 including a double and one RBI. Sumpter and Teixeira also picked up two hits on the day.
  • On the mound, Ruhlman collected his third win of the year throwing 7.0 innings and recording five strikeouts. Sumpter picked up his second save of the season throwing the final two innings and striking out three batters.
