Baseball Splits Two Games with Penn State-Behrend on Saturday
The Basics - Game One
Score: Roanoke 13, Penn State-Behrend 7
Records: Roanoke 15-7, Penn State-Behrend 9-4
Location: Salem Memorial Stadium - Salem, Va.

The Lead: RC used an 11-run third inning to defeat Behrend in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

How it Happened:
  • Behrend jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning that included a two-RBI single by Ian Taylor.
  • Roanoke responded in the bottom of the first after Eli Sumpter hit a two-RBI single to score Craig Kiley and Will Decker making the score 3-2.
  • In the bottom of the third, the Maroons were able to push across 11 runs all doing so with two outs.
  • Kiley and Scott Ellis both walked to put runners at first and second. In the next at bat Dean Hermanson singled to score Kiley to tie the score 3-3. Collier Donald would reach on an error by Behrend's short stop that would score Ellis.
  • Sean Guida singled up the middle to score Hermanson and Ellis giving RC the 6-3 advantage.
  • Will Black reached base for the second time on the day with a single, putting runners at first and third for Roanoke. Black immediately stole second base and Guida was able to reach home on the throw.
  • In the next at bat, Decker doubled to right field scoring Black. Decker would score on a single by Kiley making the score 9-3.
  • With Kiley on first base, Crutchfield would hit his first home run of the season after a two-run blast cleared the left field wall.
  • Roanoke was able to score two more runs after Sumpter and Ellis both crossed the plate giving the Maroons a 13-3 cushion heading into the fourth inning.
  • Behrend was able to push across one run in each the sixth and seventh innings and two more in the ninth inning, but fell short 13-7.
  • Crutchfield went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with one home run, one double and two RBI. Guida, Black, Kiley and Sumpter each collected two hits in game one while Guida and Sumpter also added two-RBI each.
  • On the mound, Harrison Richards picked up his third win of the year after giving up three earned runs, scattering six hits and striking out five. Diego Meneses earned his first save of the year after throwing three innings while striking out five batters.

Score: Roanoke 4, Penn State-Behrend 5
Records: Roanoke 15-8, Penn State-Behrend 10-4

The Lead: Behrend rallied in the seventh inning to score four runs helping them capture the second game of the doubleheader.
How it Happened:
  • With one out in the bottom of the third inning, Ellis and Guida collected back-to-back singles putting runners at first and second for the Maroons. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Black hit a two-RBI single down the left field line giving RC the early 2-0 lead.
  • Behrend was able to push across one run in the top of the fourth inning, but Roanoke responded in the bottom of the fifth after Kiley singled scoring Ellis making the score 3-1.
  • In the top of the seventh, Behrend used four hits and one error to plate four runners giving them the 5-3 lead heading into the final innings.
  • Hermanson tripled to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning and scored in the next at bat after Collier Donald singled to left field, but the RC rally fell short and the Maroons fell 5-4
  • Offensively, Ellis led Roanoke in game two going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI. Black earned one hit, two RBI and stole one base.
