Baseball Wins Fourth-Straight, Defeats Lynchburg 5-3

The Lead: Roanoke extended its win streak to four beating Lynchburg 5-3.

How it Happened:
  • Sean Guida continued his nine-game hitting streak after starting the game off with a single to center field. In the next at bat, Will Black hit a double to score Guida giving the Maroons the early lead.
  • Will Decker singled and stole second to put runners on second and third for Roanoke. Craig Kiley singled through the left side to score Black and Decker to make the score 3-0 in the bottom of the first.
  • Lynchburg would respond in the top of the second by pushing across one run and then two more in the top of the seventh to even the score 3-3.
  • After singles by Decker and Kiley in the bottom of the eighth, a wild pitch would score Decker and advance Kiley to second.
  • Later in the inning Kiley would score on a single by Scott Ellis to give RC a 5-3 lead heading into the final frame.
  • Eli Sumpter threw a scoreless ninth inning and struck out one batter to help give Roanoke the win.
  • Decker, Kiley and Dean Hermanson led the Maroons offensively each going 2-for-4, respectively. Kiley also picked up two RBI and scored one run and Decker scored twice. Ellis had one hit, one RBI and also stole three bases.
  • Rawlings Cumbea had a quality start for Roanoke throwing 6.1 innings while scattering six hits and striking out one. Kiley earned his second win of the season throwing 1.2 innings while striking out two batters and Sumpter earned his first collegiate save after throwing a scoreless ninth inning.
