Roanoke Baseball Sweeps No. 6 Shenandoah in ODAC Doubleheader
The Basics - Game One
Score: Roanoke 14, No 6. Shenandoah 3
Records: Roanoke 9-5 (2-1 ODAC) / Shenandoah 10-2 (0-1 ODAC)
Location: Winchester, Va.

The Lead: Sean Guida collected five hits on the day and Harrison Richards threw seven quality innings to help the Maroons give the No. 6 Shenandoah Hornets their second loss of the season.

How it Happened:
  • Roanoke got on the board first after Guida singled up the middle and worked his way around the bases to cross the plate to give the Maroons the early 1-0 lead.
  • Shenandoah would score three in its half of the first inning to make the score 3-1
  • With the bases loaded for the Maroons in the second inning, Eli Sumpter hit an RBI single. In the next at bat, Guida also hit an RBI single to even the score 3-3.
  • With the bases still loaded in the second inning, Will Decker singled to right field scoring Sumpter and Dean Hermanson.
  • RC continued its hitting outburst in the third inning after Lucas Nowlinwould single to left field scoring Clark Crutchfield who reached on a single earlier in the inning.
  • Guida picked up his third hit of the idea on a two-RBI single to right field scoring Nowlin and Scott Ellis giving the Maroons an 8-3 lead.
  • In the sixth inning, Decker collected a two-RBI single scoring Guida andWill Black who both reached on hits earlier in the inning.
  • RC continued to add runs to its 10-3 lead in the seventh inning. Sean Guida tripled to score Sumpter and Hermanson and Black would hit a sacrifice fly to score Guida in the next at bat.
  • Roanoke would add one more run in the eighth inning after Nowlin doubled to score Ellis giving the Maroons the 14-3 lead and the eventual outcome.
  • Guida was 5-for-6 at the plate with five RBI, three runs scored and a triple. Crutchfield went 3-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored and Decker had two hits on the day that led to four RBI.
  • Ellis, Nowlin and Sumpter all went 2-for-4 while Nowlin collected two RBI.
  • Richards threw seven innings on the mound for RC and scattered six hits to only give up two earned runs while striking out nine batters. Sumpter came in and gave up no runs in the last two innings and only gave up one hit.


The Basics - Game Two
Score: Roanoke 6, No. 6 Shenandoah 2
Records: Roanoke 10-5, (3-1 ODAC) / Shenandoah 10-3 (0-2 ODAC)
Location: Winchester, Va.

The Lead: After throwing the first no-hitter in Roanoke College, John Ruhlman eight innings complete the sweep over No. 6 Shenandoah.

How it Happened:
  • Both teams combined for only four hits in the first seven innings to make the game scoreless heading into the eighth inning.
  • In the top of the eighth inning, the Maroons would finally break the game open. Ellis singled to left field the start the inning and was moved over to second off of a sacrifice bunt by Nowlin. Hermanson singled to right field to advance Ellis to third.
  • With runners on first and third, Sumpter bunted to score Ellis and was also safe at first base. In the next at bat, Guida double to right center scoring Ellis.
  • Will Black singled to right field scoring Guida and would advance to second on the throw to home. In the next at bat, Decker reached on an error, which scored Black.
  • Finishing Roanoke's scoring rally was Craig Kiley who hit a two-RBI home run to give the Maroons a 6-0 lead.
  • Shenandoah was able to push two runs across in the ninth inning, but Kiley was able to minimize the damage after he came in with zero outs and the bases loaded to get the next three outs to give RC the 6-2 victory.
  • Black led the Maroons offensively going 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Kiley had two RBI with a home run and one run scored.
  • Ruhlman threw eight innings and only gave up one earned run while striking out six on the day and Kiley threw one inning while striking out two.
