The Lead: Roanoke College earned the #3 seed in the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament and hosted #6 Bridgewater in a best of three series that started on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles would plate a pair of early runs before the Maroons tied it up one inning later. The game would remained tied in the late innings before a passed ball would plate the game winning run for the Eagles, as Bridgewater took a 1-0 series lead. Per ODAC rules, the Maroons would bat first as the "visiting" team in game two. Two runs in the top of the fifth would put Roanoke in front, 2-0. After four Eagle runs, the Maroons would rally to tie the score. A late inning home run proved the difference as Bridgewater advanced by winning both games.

How it Happened:

  • Bridgewater would load the bases in the top of the first and a single to right would stake the visitors to a 2-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the second, PK Cocolis sent a double to the left centerfield wall. Gavin Kandrick made it first and third when the Eagle shortstop couldn't make the throw to first. Tyler De Meo laid down a good bunt but Cocolis was cut down at the plate. Will Smith drove in Kandrick with a base hit and De Meo scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Bridgewater would re-take the lead with a double and RBI single in the fifth to make it 3-2.
  • RC got the tying run in the bottom of the seventh. De Meo walked and Smith singled before Mason Staz walked to load the bases. Conner Butler ground into a double play to score De Meo and tie the game at 3-3.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Bridgewater put the first two runners on and appeared to take the lead but a diving stop by Butler prevented the runner from scoring. However, with two outs a ball got away from the catcher and the Eagles took a 4-3 advantage.
  • In the bottom half, the Maroons got the first two runners on with a Jonny Wall walk and Cocolis base hit. However, a fielders' choice and double play would end the RC threat.
  • Bridgewater was able to put down the Maroons, 1-2-3, in the ninth for the series opening win.
  • Cocolis was 3-3 with Will Merriken going 3-4 and Smith 2-4. De Meo scored a pair of runs.
  • Tanner James started and went the first three innings and was relieved by Aiden Kuhle. Kuhle went six innings, giving up six hits, one earned run and striking out seven.
