The Lead: Fresh off a sweep of #3 Randolph-Macon, the Roanoke baseball team started the ODAC Final Weekend tournament with a game against top ranked Lynchburg. The Hornets got a two-run home run in the opening innings to take an early lead. The Maroons answered with two to tie the game and then added 10 runs over a three-inning stretch to seize control and take a 12-2 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. A season high 24 hits would propel the Maroons to a 15-3 win over the #7 team in the nation.   

Highlights:

  • A two-run home run would stake Lynchburg to an early 2-0 lead.
  • In the top of the fourth, a PK Cocolis base hit would start the inning. After reaching on an error, Jeb Byerley and Cocolis moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. Mason Staz was walked and the basses were full of Maroons. An error by the shortstop would see a pair of unearned runs cross the plate and the game was tied.
  • One inning later, Conner Butler singled and advanced on an Owen Lawn base hit. Jonny Wall put Roanoke in front with an RBI single. Byerely added two more runs with a double to right and score on a Staz single to make it 6-2.
  • Ty Staz led off the sixth with a base hit to right. After moving up on a throwing error, Staz scored on a Butler RBI to left. Lawn singled to put runners on the corners. Cocolis added to the lead with a single to the right center gap and the advantage would grow to 9-2 on another Byerley RBI.
  • Staz (Mason) singled and advanced to third on a double by Tucker Schiavoni. Ty Staz drove in his brother and a Wall double would cap a 12-0 Roanoke run.
  • Home runs by Staz (Ty) and Lawn would highlight a three-run ninth as Roanoke advanced in the winner's bracket with a 15-3 win over their rivals from Lynchburg.
  • Caleb Lingenfelter pitched a complete game with a seven hit, eight strikeout performance. The right hander threw 132 pitches in going the distance for the win.
  • Seven different hitters would register three-hit games as all nine starters would record at least one hit, and eight of nine had multiple-hit outings.

Up next: Roanoke will await the winner of #2 Shenandoah and #3 Bridgewater in the second game tomorrow. The Maroons are scheduled to continue their journey in the 2022 ODAC Baseball Tournament on Saturday at 1:00pm.
