Roanoke Earns Trip to ODAC Finals

The Basics – ODAC Final Weekend

The Lead: Roanoke faced Shenandoah with a trip to the Championship game on Sunday on the line in day two of the 2022 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Final Weekend. After giving up a first-inning run, the Maroons built a 3-1 lead. A Roanoke miscue would allow three Hornet runs in the bottom of the seventh. Roanoke tied the game, 4-4, in the top of the ninth, but Shenandoah got a two-out, walk-off single to center to hand the Maroons their first loss of the tournament. Lynchburg would dispatch of Bridgewater and await the Maroons in a rematch of the Roanoke 15-3 win to start the weekend. A second inning run put Roanoke in front early. A triple and fielder's choice would tie the score and both teams would go scoreless the final four innings. In the first extra frame, the Maroons used a hit by pitch and free pass to put a pair of runners on base. After an out, a ground ball would lead to a double play chance. Lynchburg threw the ball away and Roanoke took a 2-1 lead. The Maroons would allow a hit but closed out the 10th for the 2-1 win. 

Highlights:

  • After falling behind 1-0, Jonny Wall started the 2nd with a walk and Jeb Byerley followed suit. With two-outs, Hunter Andrews tied the game with a base hit to right field.
  • Two innings later, Wall singled and trotted home on a PK Cocolis blast over the left field wall, 3-1, RC.
  • The Maroons would hold the lead until the bottom of the seventh. With two runners on, the Hornets attempted to put down a sacrifice bunt. After fielding the bunt, the throw would sail into right field allowing a run to cross the plate. A wild pitch would tie the score and a single through the right side would put the Hornets back in front.
  • Andrews singled and was run for by Will Smith. Smith moved to third on a Mason Staz base hit and after a Shenandoah wild pitch, the game was tied at 4-4.
  • In the bottom half, A hit batter followed by a SAC bunt would put the winning run in scoring position. After an intentional walk, an RBI single to center would hand the Maroons a 5-4 loss.
  • Will Turner got the start and went six innings on 62 pitches giving up just one, unearned, run. Cocolis and Andrews combined to go 4-8 with a run and three RBI.

Highlights:

  • Roanoke jumped out in front of Lynchburg, 1-0, when Wall scored on A Cocolis ground out. Wall had singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches.
  • The lead held until the bottom of the fifth when the Hornets used a triple and ground out to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Both teams had opportunities but both bullpens kept the game tied at 1-1 after the full nine innings.
  • In the top of the 10th, Jacob Bonzon was hit by a pitch and Staz walked. A foul out on a sacrifice bunt attempt led to the first out. Andrews hit a ground ball to short. The throw to second registered the second out but the relay throw to first went high into the screen and Bonzon scored the go ahead run.
  • Jackson Murphy had come into the game in the eighth and other than an intentional walk, had recorded six straight outs. A strikeout and line out would put Roanoke on the brink of advancing. Lynchburg stayed alive with a base hit but the final out would fall into the glove of Carson McCusker and Roanoke had eliminated the #7 team in the country from the tournament.
  • Wall recorded two of RC's five hits with Bonzon scoring the winning run. Murphy got the win after coming in relief of Aiden Kuhle and Tanner James. The trio combined for 10 innings, seven hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts while giving up just the one run.

Up next: Roanoke will know face Shenandoah for the 2022 ODAC Championship. The Maroons must defeat the Hornets twice to take the title and the first game is scheduled for a 10:00am first pitch.
