Maroons Fall to No. 15 Marietta to Close Action at Roanoke Round Robin

The Lead: The Roanoke baseball team scored first against No. 15 Marietta on Sunday evening, but the Pioneers scored late to come away with a 3-2 win over the Maroons to close out the action at the Roanoke Round Robin at Salem Memorial BallPark. 

Highlights:

  • Conner Butler opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth with an unearned run as he reached first on an error by the second baseman before advancing all the way to third on two different wild pitches. Nate Prince would knock him in on a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Maroons ahead 1-0.
  • The Pioneers would take the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs on a two-RBI single to center field. Roanoke didn't take long to answer as the Maroons went back on top in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Jacob Bonzon singled to right before reaching third on a fielding error by the right fielder. Nathan Keough, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on the play. During the next at-bat, Bonzon reached home safely on a wild pitch to put the Maroons back on top 3-2.
  • The two teams kept it scoreless until Marietta scored three runs in the top of the eighth and added two more in the top of the ninth to come away with the 7-3 win.

Up next: The Maroons are on the road this week starting with a pair of single games at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday, March 7, and Wednesday, March 8. Both games begin at 3 p.m. in Baltimore.
