Maroon Competes at Enduro Race in Virginia

The Roanoke cycling team raced this weekend at an Enduro race, where the Maroons had different stages they competed through through different road conditions and elevations.

Kelby Hanson's Race Report: "Enduro racing involves a big day out on the bike of stage racing. Riders climb up stage transfers at their own pace, to only be timed on the downhill stages. The race venue at Blue Ridge School had a good mix of rocks and flow for the downhills, and long climbs for the transfers. This was a five-stage race that ranged in length from 3 to 6 minutes each. There had been plenty of rain the day or two before, so pre-riding the course was a wet and muddy mess. Luckily enough it dried out perfectly for race day.

Stage 1 went pretty well for me. There were a few tricky rock gardens that as long as you knew were coming, you'd be good.

Stage 2 was the shortest. This was the one stage that I relied on my memory from last year's race and didn't pre-ride.

Stage 3 began right after the longest and hardest transfer, straight up on an old and steep gravel road. This stage was essentially straight down, with a few stream crossings and plenty of rocks to slip you up.

Stage 4 began, again at the top of the mountain, with a long flowy and pedally section before it got slower and more technical. Towards the end I had a small crash but was able to get back up and going pretty fast.

Stage 5 was the final test, the flattest stage which took the most peddling through flowy berms and rollers."
