DePauw defeats Roanoke, 4-3 in Field Hockey Action
SALEM, Va. --- DePauw rallied from a 2-0 first-half deficit to defeat Roanoke, 4-3 in the Maroons home-opener Sunday afternoon. The women are now 0-2 on the season while the Tigers improved to 1-1.
 
Roanoke got on the board first as Helen Pearsall (Chicago, IL, Berkshire School)scored off an assist from Hannah Gerry (Sudbury, MA, Lincoln Sudbury Regional)just 10 minutes into play. With nine minutes remaining in the half, Abby Bjork (Westborough, MA, Westborough)scored to give the Maroons a 2-0 lead.
 
DePauw answered back with a Sarah Riffle goal three minutes later to cut the Tiger deficit to one, 2-1 heading into halftime.
 
DePauw continued their momentum in the second half, scoring two goals in the next 12 minutes to take a 3-2 lead.
 
Three minutes after Roanoke lost the lead, Jessica Perkins (Abington, PA, Abington)scored her second goal of the season to tie the contest at 3-3.
 
With time winding down in regulation, Riffle's shot found the back of the cage to score the game-winner for her second goal of the afternoon.
 
DePauw outshot Roanoke, 28-15, including 18-5 in the second half alone. Katie Sowar led the Tigers with 12, 11 on goal.
 
Liz Attewell picked up her first win of the season in goal, stopping seven shots for the Tigers while Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)finished with 19 saves for the Maroons.
 
The women return to action on Sept. 12 as they travel to Winchester, Va. to take on Shenandoah. The Maroons defeated the Hornets, 8-0 last season and hold a 6-0 series advantage. Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
