Roanoke Gets First Win of the Season Against Virginia Wesleyan, 4-3
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke Field Hockey picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over ODAC-foe Virginia Wesleyan at Kerr Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons record now stands at 1-6, 1-1 in the ODAC while the Marlins dropped to 2-6, 1-1 in the conference.
 
The Maroons, who never trailed against the Marlins in the contest, led 2-0 after the first 26 minutes of play. In their largest lead of the season, Jessica Perkins (Abington, PA, Abington)scored off an assist from Helen Pearsall (Chicago, IL, Berkshire School)just 10 minutes into play to make it 1-0.
 
The second goal of the game came from Kate McGuire (Royal Oak, MD, Easton)off an assist from Ashley Fuhrer (Moorestown, NJ, Moorestown )with nine minutes remaining in the half to make it, 2-0.
 
Just under a minute after the Maroon goal, Virginia Wesleyan got on the board with a Sara Adams unassisted goal to make it 2-1 heading into the half.
 
Seven minutes into the second half, Birgit van Rijswijk scored the equalizer to make it 2-2 and gave the Marlins the momentum in the game.
 
Roanoke bounced back with a Mariah Vietri (Jamestown, RI, Rocky Hill)goal two minutes later to give the Maroons a 3-2 lead. Rijswijk scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Adams to tie the score once again at 3-3 with 22 minutes left to play.
 
Needing a goal with just over 10 minutes remaining, Vietri scored her second goal of the game off Pearsall's second assist of the afternoon to give her and her team the first game-winning goal of the season.
 
Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)finished the day with six saves in goal for Roanoke. Emily Raddatz had four stops for the Marlins. Virginia Wesleyan held the edge in both shots (12-11) and penalty corners (11-4).
 
The women return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30 with a game against Catawba at Kerr Stadium in non-conference action. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
