Field Hockey defeats Sweet Briar, 4-2 in ODAC Action
SWEET BRIAR, Va. --- Roanoke defeated Sweet Briar, 4-2 in conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved to 2-7 overall and 2-1 in the ODAC while the Vixens dropped to 0-3 on the season.
 
Roanoke out-shot the Vixens, 31-8, 20-5 in shots on goal and held a 15-7 advantage on penalty corners. Helen Pearsall (Chicago, IL, Berkshire School)and Jessica Perkins (Abington, PA, Abington)each totaled five shots for Roanoke. Alex Broadbent (Pisgah Forest, NC, Carolina Day)led the Maroons with four shots on goal, followed by Perkins with three on the afternoon.
 
Broadbent scored the first goal off a corner from Abby Bjork (Westborough, MA, Westborough)to make it 1-0 just 12 minutes into play.  Perkins scored her team-high fifth goal of the season unassisted to make it, 2-0 with eight minutes left in the half.
 
Just before halftime, Mariah Vietri (Jamestown, RI, Rocky Hill)scored her third goal of the season off an assist from Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien)to go into the half with a 3-0 advantage.
 
In the second half, Sweet Briar scored early as Alanna Keane scored to make it, 3-1. In the 56th minute, Pearsall scored her third goal of the year off an assist from Lindsay Bass to give the final result with four minutes left in the contest.
 
Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)finished with three saves for Roanoke while Sweet Briar's Madeline Wilson totaled 14 on the afternoon.
 
The women will take on Lynchburg on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at Kerr Stadium in ODAC play. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
