ASHLAND, Va. --- Randolph-Macon downed Roanoke 5-1 in Ashland Saturday afternoon. R-MC has now won their last five games to improve to 5-8 overall and 2-2 in the ODAC. The Maroons dropped to 2-9, 2-3 in the conference.
Kendall Lam started the scoring for the Yellow Jackets in the third minute when she netted a pass from Young to make it, 1-0. Meredith Young extended the lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal in the ninth minute.
The Maroons got back in the game when Mariah Vietri (Jamestown, RI, Rocky Hill)scored unassisted in the 18th minute, cutting the lead to 2-1. Roanoke's defense held off a shot barrage by the Yellow Jackets to keep the one-goal deficit by the end of the first half.
R-MC came out of halftime firing with Mary McCarthy netting a goal in the 38th minute to make it, 3-1 early in the second half. Monica Jenkins pushed the lead to 4-1 when she took a pass from McCarthy and rattled the cage. McCarthy scored her second goal of the game in the 66th minute to give the final result.
Randolph-Macon outshot Roanoke 32-10, 20-6 in the first half and edged the Maroons 19-5 in penalty corners. Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)finished with 14 saves in goal for Roanoke while Nicole Woodworth had five for the Yellow Jackets.
The women will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 13 as they take on Washington & Lee in ODAC action. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
