LEXINGTON, Va. --- Roanoke dropped a 7-0 field hockey match to Washington & Lee on Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 2-10, 2-4 in the ODAC. The Generals improved to 6-6 overall and 4-2 in conference play.
Washington & Lee had seven different players register at least one point in winning for the fifth time in its last seven games. The Maroons are now 4-7 all-time against the Generals, dropping their last six in the series since 2005.
The Generals boasted a 3-0 halftime lead and never looked back in winning their sixth match of the season. Sallie Armstrong scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from Christina Benedetti three minutes into action.
Just 21-seconds into the second half, Steph Mansey scored off an assist from Armstrong to give the Generals a comfortable 4-0 lead and cruised to victory. Armstrong finished with two goals and one assist while Katherine Price had two goals for W&L.
The Generals outshot Roanoke 34-1 and boasted a 16-1 advantage in penalty corners. Cristina Scichilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional)made 14 saves for the Maroons, while Caroline Habliston and Caroline Sutherland both saw time in the cage for W&L. Schicilone surpassed the 100-save mark on the season.
Lee Sheldon (Darien, CT, Darien)provided the only shot for the Maroons on the afternoon while Ashley Fuhrer (Moorestown, NJ, Moorestown )notched her seventh defensive save of the season.
The women return to Salem for two home matches this weekend. The Maroons will host Sewanee on Saturday followed by Mary Washington on Sunday. Both game times are scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
