SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke dropped a 7-2 decision to Eastern Mennonite in their conference-opener Wednesday afternoon at Kerr Stadium. The Maroons fell to 1-5, 0-1 in ODAC play, while the Royals improved to 4-2, 1-0 in the conference.
Kelly Finn (Fairhaven, NJ) led the way for the Maroons, scoring two goals to give her a team-best three on the season. Cristina Schicilone (South Yarmouth, MA, Nauset Regional) finished with 12 saves on the afternoon.
Adriana Santiago led EMU with three goals and two assists. Linda Cimini added two goals followed by Hailee Rittle with a goal and two assists. Beck Nolt had a save in the cage for the Royals.
Leading 3-0 at the half, Cimini scored her second goal of the game off an assist from Santiago nearly six minutes in to take the four-goal advantage.
Finn scored from four yards out into the left side of the cage to put the Maroons on the board seven minutes later to make it, 4-1. Santiago scored back-to-back goals to increase her team's lead to 6-1 with five minutes remaining.
Sophie Wilson (Dobbs Ferry, NY, The Masters School) found Finn from the end line as she smacked in her third goal of the season with less than four minutes left.
EMU outshot Roanoke, 29-4, including 27-3 in shots on goal. The Royals also held a 11-1 advantage in penalty corners.
The women will travel to Lynchburg College on Saturday, Sept. 25 in ODAC action. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
