Roanoke defeated Rhodes 1-0

The Basics
Score: Roanoke 1 | Rhodes 0

Records: Maroons 3-2 | Lynx 3-3
Location: Sewanee, Tenn.

The Lead: Sunday marked the second of back-to-back games in Tennessee for a Roanoke field hockey team looking to get over the .500 mark for the first time this season. A 6-0 winner over Sewanee yesterday, the Maroons took on Rhodes looking to run their win streak to three games. A penalty shot awarded in the first quarter would see Roanoke take the advantage and hold it through the remainder of the first half. The Maroons outshot the Lynx and thanks to a trifecta of saves, Roanoke held on for the 1-0 win.

Highlights:

  • At the 10-minute mark of the matchup, Roanoke was awarded a penalty corner that led to an Emilee Wooten scoring chance. The shot was saved but a penalty in the box would give Roanoke a penalty shot. Wooten was able to beat the Rhodes goalie for an 1-0 advantage.
  • The Lynx would have a 3-1 shot edge in the second period, but the game remained 1-0 at the half.
  • The Maroons would control much of the third quarter but shots by Emily Gabrielian and Grace Vernarelli were saved by the Lynx, keeping the Roanoke advantage at 1-0.
  • In the end, the Maroons would lead in shots, 7-5, shots on goal, 4-3, and most importantly on the scoreboard, 1-0.
  • Hannah Roerden picked up the shutout, her second in as many days, recording saves on each of the three shots on goal that she faced.

Up next: The Maroons will return home to face Wilson College next Saturday at 2:00pm on the turf of Kerr Stadium.
