The Lead: For the final time this regular season, the Roanoke field hockey team played in front of the home fans when they took on Virginia Wesleyan in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) game. The Maroons scored first but an answer by the Marlins tied it at 1-1. A late first half score allowed RC to take a 2-1 lead into the break. A big second half by the home team, five goals, allowed Roanoke to even their ODAC record at 3-3.

Highlights:

  • Just minutes into the game, Emilee Wooten scored off an assist from Grace Vernarelli for an early RC advantage.
  • Just past the half-way point of the opening quarter, the Marlins tied the game at 1-1.
  • One of the Maroon's 12 Penalty Corners would see the Maroons re-take the lead. Hope Keller triggered the corner and sent a pass to Wooten who found Martha Hurley for a return pass to Keller for the score.
  • 35 seconds into the second half, Lindsey Keyes made it 3-0. Abby McCusker scored a pair of goals in a two-minute stretch, giving the home team a 5-1 lead after three quarters.
  • In the fourth period, Hannah Bunten and Emily Gabrielian wrapped up the scoring as the Maroons cruised to a 7-1 ODAC win.
  • In goal, Madison Wingerter picked up her fifth win of the season, recording one save.
