Game Notes vs. Guilford - Men's Basketball

Series Information
Roanoke leads the all-time series vs. Guilford, 37-13. The Maroons have won two of the last four meetings, both while Guilford was ranked in the top-20. The Quakers won the series 2-1 last year, with Roanoke winning the first meeting, 68-56 at home against the #16 Quakers. A week later, the Maroons lost 92-56 in Greensboro, N.C which was the worst loss in Page Moirs' career. The Quakers took the third meeting in the ODAC Semifinals, 67-57 ending the Maroons season.

Last Meeting - 2008 ODAC Semifinals
Salem, Va. --- The men's basketball team fell to #12 Guilford, 63-53 in the ODAC Semifinals at the Salem Civic Center this evening. The Quakers advance to the ODAC Championship game between the winner of the Hampden-Sydney/Virginia Wesleyan game and improved to 23-4. The Maroons end their season at 18-9.
It was the final game for seniors Keith Carter, AJ Dowell, Jeff Leiter, Josh LaPorte, Ben Shrader and Ty Sigmon. They finished their careers with a four-year mark of 64-43.
The tightly played game featured eight ties, including a 26-26 deadlock at halftime. The teams were knotted at 40 midway through the second half before Guilford got some breathing room with a Caleb Kimbrough three-pointer followed by a Clay Henson basket that opened a 50-44 spread with 7:07 remaining in regulation.
Consecutive baskets by Curtis Peery kept Roanoke within 52-48 with 5:50 left before a 6-0 Guilford spurt opened a 58-48 margin with 3:40 to play. Melvin Felix's three-pointer with 1:53 left made it a 60-53 game, but the Maroons missed four shots and turned the ball over once over its next four possessions. Guilford built its lead to 14 by making six-of-seven free throws in the final minute.
The Quakers started the week ranked first in NCAA Division III in rebounding margin and enjoyed a 51-31 advantage on the glass against the Maroons. Guilford grabbed 16 offensive caroms, leading to 19 points. Roanoke's nine offensive boards resulted in six points. The Quakers outscored Roanoke in the paint, 40-16.
Ben Strong led Guilford with 18 points and 11 rebounds, three blocked shots. Eric Belkoski poured in 13 points to go along with nine rebounds for the Quakers.
Felix led the Maroons with 14 points while Peery chipped in 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds in addition to three steals. Shrader hit 3-of-5 from three-point range and Zach Milton had a career-best three steals. Dowell had five points and seven assists in his final collegiate game.
Last Time Out - vs. EMU Jan. 10
Salem, Va. --- Melvin Felix and Curtis Peery both scored in double figures in the 80-77 victory over Eastern Mennonite on Saturday night at the C. Homer Bast Center. The Maroons are 12-1 overall and preserved an undefeated 4-0 mark in the ODAC. The Royals fell to 7-4 overall, 3-2 in the ODAC.
Roanoke, ranked #22 in the latest top-25 poll, shot 50% from the floor while holding their opponents to under 30% in the second half to win their 11th-straight. It is the longest win streak and best start since the 1999-00 season.
Peery recorded his second double-double of the week and his fifth of the season with 23 points including a career-best 12 rebounds. He passed Tony Proietti '52 and Jared Butler '06 for 22nd on the all-time scoring list with 1,123 points. The Salem native also led the Maroons with three steals.
Felix led the Maroons with a career-high 25 points and season-high five assists including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. The second-highest scorer on the team (10.8 ppg), Felix has scored in double-figures in six games this season.
A slow start for both teams, Roanoke and Eastern Mennonite swapped the lead several times in the first six minutes of the contest. The Royals went on a 10-2 run for an eight-point lead, 17-9 with 11:13 to go in the first half.
After the Maroons cut it to within five, the Royals broke out on a 14-3 run for a comfortable 16-point advantage, 34-18 with 7:25 remaining. Roanoke chipped away their deficit with big three-pointers from Drew Gaeng and Felix as they closed to within 10, 42-32 heading into intermission.
Roanoke continued their momentum from the end of the first half and brought it within three at the 14:30 minute mark when Parrish Walker's lay-up made it, 52-49. EMU maintained the lead until Felix hit a jumper to tie the game at 57 with 10:24 left to play.
The first lead for the Maroons since the 16:16 mark in the first half occurred as Corey Poindexter swished a two-pointer with 9:06 remaining.
Roanoke gained the lead for good after a trey from Poindexter that gave the Maroons a 73-71 edge. The Maroons held the lead and sealed the game with three free-throws from Felix as the remaining seconds ticked off the clock.
Poindexter finished with nine points and three rebounds off the bench in the victory. Walker had eight points and a career-high nine rebounds along with three assists.
Johnson led Eastern Mennonite with 20 points and six rebounds. Three other Royals scored in double-figures including D.J. Hinson (12) Orie Pancione (10), and LeRoger Parrish (12). The trio combined for 15 boards.
About the Maroons
Roanoke, (12-1, 4-0 ODAC) is on an 11-game winning streak marking best start (overall and ODAC) and longest win streak since the 1999-00 season. The Maroons won both ODAC contests last week against Emory & Henry (101-86) and Eastern Mennonite, 80-77 last Saturday. Curtis Peery notched back-to-back double-doubles for the first time in his career and has five on the season. He scored 23 points and pulled down a career-best 12 rebounds in the win over the Royals. Roanoke had two 20-point scorers in back-to-back games for the first time this season. Parrish Walker led the Maroons with 26 points at E&H while Melvin Felix scored 25 against EMU. It was the first time since the 2003-04 season that there has been back-to-back games with two 20-point scorers (Jared Butler, Kevinn Hunter and Jason Graffam).
Scouting the Quakers
Guilford, (9-2, 3-0 ODAC) is riding a six-game win streak coming into Monday's game. The Quakers are undefeated in conference play and are off to their best start since the 2006-07 club who won 11 of its first 13 games. Clay Henson paces Guilford's scorers with 19.2 ppg including a 29-point showing in the ODAC victory over Lynchburg. He also leads the team in assists (40). Guilford's Rhett Ronner averages 15.3 ppg and was the leading scorer in three games this season. Tyler Sandborn is the team's third highest scorer (13.3 ppg) and is the team leader in rebounds (12.2 rpb). He recorded a double-double in the win over Randolph (1/10) and notched a career-high of seven blocked shots in the Quakers' Dec. 30 win over Emory.
Roanoke Ranked in Top-25
Roanoke is ranked #22 in the latest top-25 poll for the first time since this time last season. They were ranked #24 last season for one week. This week's ranking for the Maroons is the highest since the 2001 season (#21 Feb. 2001). The men jumped up four spots from last month's poll just before the holiday break. Randolph-Macon is the only other ODAC school with votes in the poll with 12.
Record Watch
With four more blocks, senior forward Aaron Tyson will join the top-10 all-time at Roanoke in career blocked shots. He comes into tonight's game with 58 for his career.
Curtis Peery passed Tony Proietti '52 and Jared Butler '06 for 22nd on the all-time scoring list with 1,123 points. He needs 56 more points to gain sole possession of 21st moving past Mike Bake '81 with 1,188. The Salem native recorded his second double-double of the week and his fifth of the season with 23 points including a career-best 12 rebounds in the 80-77 victory over Eastern Mennonite.
Ranked in the ODAC
Curtis Peery is ranked in the top-5 in the ODAC in four different categories. He leads the conference in free throw percentage (95.5%), is fourth in scoring, third in rebounding, and second in defensive rebounds. Peery averages 1.5 steals per game to tie for 11th place in the ODAC with teammate Drew Gaeng. Gaeng is also eighth in the conference with 3.5 assists per game
Parrish Walker averages 2.5 steals per game to lead the ODAC. He moved from third to first and has recorded 30 steals this season.
