Guilford Tops Roanoke, 77-72

GREENSBORO, NC --- Guilford held off Roanoke's late surge to pull off a 77-72 victory on Wednesday evening. The loss dropped the Maroons to 15-4, 7-3 in the ODAC while the Quakers improved to 14-4, 7-2 in the ODAC. The win puts Guilford in sole possession of second in the latest ODAC standings.
Guilford has won 10 of its last 13 games and rebounded from a 69-66 loss at Bridgewater last weekend. The Quakers are now 5-4 against the Maroons since 2005, but Roanoke leads the all-time series, 38-14. Moir hasn't won in Greensboro since the 2005-06 season.
Roanoke jumped out to a 14-8 lead in the first seven minutes of the game before the Quakers took the lead for good on an 18-4 run to make it, 26-18 with 2:12 remaining in the half.
Clay Henson scored the first basket of the second half to make it, 28-21 before Parrish Walker and Curtis Peery combined for 12 points during a 15-8 run. Walker's second three-pointer during that span tied the contest at 36-all with 15-minutes remaining.
Roanoke tied the game twice more before Guilford pulled away with a 12-1 run to take a game-high 11-point lead, 54-43 with eight minutes left.
The Maroons didn't go away quietly as they pulled to within three with less than three-seconds left after Walkers' third three-pointer of the night. Rhett Bonner sank both of his free throws to win and move into second in the ODAC.
Peery finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season for the Maroons. He is now 23rd all-time on the career scoring list with 1,115 points, only three behind 2006 graduate Jared Butler.
Walker had 17 points and hit 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in front of his hometown crowd. Melvin Felix tossed in 16 points while Drew Gaeng chipped in nine points along with four rebounds. Aaron Tyson blocked three shots to move into a tie for eighth al-time at Roanoke (65). He is one block away from 31, which is tied for 10th in single-season blocks.
Guilford's Bonner led all scorers with 21 points, hitting 9-of-10 from the line along with five rebounds. Tyler Sandborn had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds in addition to three blocks and 9-of-10 from the line as well. Clay Henson had 17 points and Grabriel Lowder tossed in 11 points.
The men will host Lynchburg in ODAC action Saturday, Jan. 31. The Maroons are 114-22 all-time against the Hornets and have won the last 10 meetings, including a 76-57 victory at Lynchburg on Dec. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. following the women's game against Hollins at 4 p.m.
