HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Roanoke dropped its fifth of seven outings in a 67-63 loss at Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 16-6 overall, 8-5 in the ODAC while the Tigers improved to 11-12, 6-8 in the conference.

The Tigers outscored the Maroons, 19-12 off turnovers, 24-22 in the paint and 31-16 off the bench. Roanoke outrebounded HSC, 50-31 but couldn't overcome 37.5% shooting for the night, including a 15.8% mark from beyond the arc (3-of-19). The 50 rebounds was the most since Jan. 2 against PSU-Abington and was the fifth time this season the men pulled down over 50 rebounds.
It was the first time all season that the Maroons didn't record a blocked shot and the three treys and the 15.8% was season lows.
Roanoke jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after Drew Gaeng's three-pointer and Curtis Peery's back-to-back buckets as if the two were going to have similar nights like they did in Ashland a week prior.
But Hampden-Sydney took over as Ben Jessee's three with 11:05 to go in the first half capped a 16-2 run to give the Tigers the lead for good, 18-9.
Roanoke cut it to two as they countered with an 8-1 run to make it 19-17 with 8:20 left in the half. The Tigers extended their lead to 10 before Peery's back-to-back lay-ups cut the Maroon deficit to six, 33-27 at halftime.
HSC extended its lead once again to 12 but Roanoke wouldn't go away. After Karlis Trops' free-throw made the score, 43-31, the Maroons roared back on a 12-0 run as Peery's free-throws tied the contest at 43-all with seven minutes remaining.
Over the next six minutes, the Tigers pulled away slowly, as a conventional three-point play by Turner King pushed the lead to 10, 59-49 with 1:14 to go. Roanoke didn't go away quietly, as they chipped away at the lead and made it, 67-63 with four-seconds remaining after Walker's three-pointer. But they couldn't get the steal off the inbound giving the Tigers their second-straight win.
Peery led all scorers with 17 points and nine rebounds, nearly missing a double-double. He is tied with James Pennix '88 for 17th on the all-time scoring list with 1,273 points. He trails Morris Cregger '64 by only nine points. He is currently seventh all-time at Roanoke in the Div. III-era (1979-pres.). His three free-throws made now puts him 10th all-time in that category with 285.

Hampden-Sydney was led by Ben Jessee off the bench with 16 points and three assists. The Tigers had three other players score in double-figures with Turner King and Lane Medlin chipping in 11 and Karlis Trops with 10. Shane Payne nearly had a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds.
The men will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to battle Eastern Mennonite in ODAC action. The Maroons are 57-13 all-time against the Royals and defeated them, 80-77 at the Bast Center on Jan. 10. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
