Game Notes vs. Emory & Henry ? Men's Basketball

The Roanoke College men's basketball team will host Emory & Henry (5-10, 11-13 ODAC) in their final home game on Saturday evening at the Bast Center. The Maroons (18-6, 10-5), are tied with Bridgewater for the third-place slot in the latest ODAC standings. Roanoke will honor their four seniors, Aaron Tyson, Curtis Peery, Zach Milton, and Drew Gaeng in a brief ceremony before tip-off.

Series Information vs. the Wasps

Roanoke is 62-39 all-time vs. the Wasps since 1912. The Maroons won in 2006-07, 112-107 in overtime at EHC, breaking a four-game skid against the Wasps. It was the most points the Maroons scored against EHC in the 95-year series. The Maroons defeated the Wasps, 100-90 for the first time on the road since 2004-05. Prior to 2004, the Maroons won the previous nine of 10 meetings. The Maroons have scored over 100 points in six of the last seven meetings, including a 100-90 decision on Jan. 9, which was the first time the Wasps were held to under 100 points all season. Roanoke also defeated the Wasps earlier this season, 101-86.

EMORY, Va. --- Roanoke had two 20-point scorers lead the Maroons past Emory & Henry, 101-86 on the road Wednesday evening. The men improved to 11-1 overall, 3-0 in the ODAC while the Wasps dropped to 7-6, 1-3 in the ODAC.
Roanoke is now 62-39 all-time vs. the Wasps. Curtis Peery scored over 20-points for the third time in his career against the Wasps with 24 on the evening in addition to 11 rebounds. He is now 24th all-time on the career scoring list, passing both Brad Dunleavy and Ron Pendleton with 1,100 career points.
The Maroons, ranked #22 in the D3Hoops Top-25 Poll, won their 10th-straight game, which is the most since the 1999-00 season (13). The 11-1 start is also the best since the 1999-00 season.
In a game with nine ties and 13 lead changes, Roanoke pulled away midway through the second half. They outscored the Maroons, 28-14 in the paint which mostly came during the second half.
Parrish Walker finished with a career-high 26 points to lead the Maroons along with a team-high five assists. Kendrick Chittock finished with six points and five rebounds in his first start of his career. Logan Singletonscored a career-best 16 points along with five rebounds to pace the Maroons.
Josh Lee led the Wasps with 20 points and six rebounds off the bench. Terrance Grigg finished with 16 points while Kyle Hutchins had 12 points in the losing effort.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Roanoke outscored Washington & Lee, 28-9, over the final 7:48 of the game to take a 73-66 decision from the Generals in ODAC men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Warner Center. The win keeps the Maroons at third in the latest ODAC Standings.
Roanoke, who has won back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 12-14 (Guilford/Bridgewater), is now 74-37 all-time against the Generals and avenged a 68-66 loss at the Bast Center a month ago. It was the last of a four-game road trip for the Maroons.
The win was the 18th of the year, equaling last season's total for the Maroons. It was the first time Roanoke came-from-behind to win since defeating Guilford, 80-76 at the Bast Center on Jan. 12. The win also marks Page Moir's 350th career victory. He is currently the winningest active coach in the ODAC and is five ODAC wins shy of becoming the all-time leader in that category.

A layup by junior forward Ben Goetsch with 7:48 remaining in the contest capped a 14-4 run by W&L and gave the Generals a 57-45 lead before the Maroons (18-6, 10-5) began their game-ending run.

Washington and Lee (13-11, 6-9) held a slight 28-27 advantage after an evenly played first period that saw five ties and six lead changes. Washington and Lee shot just 41.7 percent in the first half (10-24), compared to 55.0 percent for the Maroons (11-20), but connected on four three-pointers to RC's zero.

Two free throws by senior forward Ben Heller with 17:36 left to play gave W&L a 38-36 lead, an advantage that W&L would hold until a three-pointer from Roanoke sophomore guard Corey Poindexter with 1:56 showing on the clock gave the Maroons a 63-61 cushion. Heller responded with two more free throws to tie the game at 63-63 at the 1:29 mark, but RC outscored W&L 10-3 the rest of the way.

Washington and Lee shot just 38.6 percent on the game (22-57), while RC connected on 52.0 percent of its attempts from the floor (26-50). The Maroons also held a 33-30 advantage on the boards and committed two fewer turnovers than the Generals (14-16).
Roanoke scored 20 points off 16 W&L turnovers and outscored the Generals, 28-18 in the paint.

Senior guard Chris McHugh led W&L with a career-high 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from behind the arc. Goetsch added 15 points, while Heller chipped in 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Sophomore guard Melvin Felix led Roanoke with a career-high 28 points. Felix was 8-of-12 from the floor and connected on 11-of-12 shots from the line. Poindexter tossed in nine points off 4-of-5 shooting while Will Sheppard came off the bench to score five points and grab four rebounds in 15 minutes of play.
Senior center Curtis Peery added 18 points and a game-high six rebounds. He now has 1,319 career points, moving into 15th on the all-time scoring list, three shy of passing former great Hal Johnston '72.
Scouting the Wasps (5-10, 11-13 ODAC)
E&H held senior day last Saturday honoring seven players and one student asst. coach. These seven seniors will leave a scoring legacy never matched at Emory & Henry. Combined the seven seniors scored 5,004 points during their career. They led the nation twice in assists and ranked among the tops in the nation in scoring each season. The Wasps will miss Jarell Christian, Andrew Hart, Kyle Huckins, Robert Hudson, Josh Lee, Marques Thomas, Camillo Weinz and student asst. coach Darick Thomas.
Robert Hudson leads the Wasps in points per game (12.9), three-pointers made (66), and steals (48). Hudson is also shooting 80.1 % from the line. Hudson recorded 17 points against Guilford on Feb. 18 including five three-pointers.
Terrance Grigg is EHC's top rebounder with 4.7 boards per game. He also averages 10.8 ppg and is second on the team in blocks (8). Grigg shot 6-for-8 from the floor for 12 points in the Wasp's last time out vs. Guilford and pulled down four rebounds.
EHC is also led by Kyle Huckins who averages 11.5 points per game and is second on the team in rebounds (111). Camillo Weinz has averaged 9.3 points per game and has drained 60 three-pointers this season. Third on the team in rebounding is Josh Brown (100). Brown averages 8.3 points per game and is shooting 61.6 % from the field.
About the Maroons (18-6, 10-5 ODAC)
Roanoke is currently 18-6 overall, and ties last season's win total. They have a 10-5 ODAC mark, which puts them in a tie for third with Bridgewater College in the latest conference standings. The men recently defeated Eastern Mennonite, 84-63 in Harrisonburg, Va. last Saturday to complete the season-sweep against the Royals. They also avenged their 68-66 loss to Washington & Lee on Jan. 17 with a 73-66 victory in Lexington, Va. on Thursday.
Curtis Peery leads the team in scoring (18.5 ppg), rebounding (6.8 rpg), free-throws made (120), percentage (84.5%) along with field goals made (162) and percentage (53.8%). He is second in blocked shots (12) and has 10 20-point games this season. Peery has scored in double-figures in all but one game this year and has produced seven double-doubles performances. The Salem native is currently 16th on the all-time scoring list with 1,315 points, eight shy of passing Hal Johnston '72 (1,322 pts).
Aaron Tyson's 34 blocked shots lead the team and is ninth on the all-time single-season list at Roanoke. His 68 career blocks are one shy of passing Kevinn Hunter '05 for seventh all-time. He also averages 5.1 rebounds which is second on the team. Drew Gaeng is enjoying the best season of his career, leading the Maroons in assists (69), three-pointers made (39) and assist-turnover ratio (2.02). Parrish Walker (11.4 ppg) and Melvin Felix (11.4 ppg) help with the scoring load to pace the Maroons.
Senior Night Feb. 21
Roanoke College will honor seniors Drew Gaeng, Zach Milton, Curtis Peery and Aaron Tyson on senior night at the Bast Center Saturday, Feb. 21. It will be another big ODAC game for the Maroons in their regular-season finale against the Wasps. The ODAC Tournament is Feb. 29-Mar. 1 at the Salem Civic Center.

Curtis Peery's 1,315 career points puts him eight shy of passing Hal Jonston '72 for 15th on the all-time scoring list at Roanoke. He is currently sixth all-time since the NCAA Div. III-era (1979-pres.). His 295 career free-throws made are now 10th all-time at Roanoke.
Aaron Tyson has 34 blocked shots this season, currently ninth on the single-season list. His 68 career blocks is one shy of passing Kevinn Hunter '05 for seventh all-time. Drew Gaeng is currently among the top-10 in single-season three-point percentage (.435).
