Men's Basketball Game Notes vs. Randolph

Roanoke, who is ranked #21 in the D3Hoops.com top-25 poll, will be on the road against Randolph on Wednesday, Jan. 21. The Maroons are currently 14-2, 6-1 in the ODAC while the Wildcats are 2-12, 0-7 in conference play.
First-ever Meeting in Series
Roanoke and Randolph will meet tomorrow night for the first time. This is the fourth opponent this season that the Maroons have met for the first time. They have defeated Penn-State Abington (106-55) and Johnson & Wales (91-79) in addition to splitting with Muskingum (1-1). After dropping their only game of the season (83-79 ot) on Nov. 16, the Maroons defeated the Muskies, 76-67 in overtime a week later to capture the V-Foundation Classic Championship. The Maroons are 167-91 in series openers.
About the Wildcats
Aurimas Lekavicius recorded a season-high 13 points and six rebounds in the WildCats lone ODAC contest this past week, a 78-67 loss at Eastern Mennonite University. He added two assists, going 1-1 from behind the arc in the loss. Jason Rutschman notched 14 points and five boards to lead the squad. Derrick Woods-Morrow is averaging 10.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, second in the conference. His 58.2% field goal percentage is third in the ODAC. Jason Rutschman's 55.2% three-point percentage is the best in the ODAC.
Last Time Out - vs. W&L Jan. 17 (68-66 L)
SALEM, Va. --- Drew Gaeng scored a career-high of 17 points in a 68-66 loss to Washington & Lee Saturday night at the Bast Center. The Maroons fell to 14-2 and 6-1 in the ODAC. The Generals improved to 11-6, and 4-2 in the conference. Roanoke still holds a 73-37 lead in the all-time series, 26-4 since 1995.
The loss broke Roanoke's undefeated record at home this season and capped its win-streak at 13 games. The 14-2 record is the best start in school history since the 1999-00 campaign. It was only the second game this season that the Maroons have scored less than 70 points.
Roanoke won the rebounding battle, 34-23, and tied W&L with 22 points in the paint. The Generals outscored the Maroons in second chance points (14-12), fast break points (6-4), bench points (23-20) and in points off turnovers (24-7). W&L was 20-of-28 from the line while the Maroons only went to the line five times (5-9).
The Maroons scored first as Curtis Peery laid it in for two points. W&L's Isaiah Goodman responded with a jumper at the 16:53 minute mark to tie it at 2-2. After four lead exchanges, Ryan Owens and Ben Heller both produced in the paint to give the Generals a 16-7 lead with 11:40 left to play in the half.
Roanoke's Corey Poindexter hit one from downtown followed by a trey and jumper from Parrish Walker to put the Maroons up by one (17-16) with 9:44 remaining. An additional three-pointer from Walker sent the Maroons on a 9-4 to produce a seven point lead (29-22) at 4:27.
Melvin Felix scored a lay-up in addition to a bucket from Kendrick Chittock and Logan Singleton to start another run (10-6) for the Maroons. Poindexter and Singleton both added a three-pointer to contribute to the 11-point edge (39-28) at the half.
The Generals kicked off the second half with a layup and three-pointer from Zac White to cut the lead to six (39-33). Gaeng responded with a trey followed by a jumper for Peery to make it 44-33 at the 18:23 minute mark.
Roanoke stretched its lead to 12-points off of a bucket from Peery at the 16:22minute mark and managed to maintain a nine or better edge until Chris McHugh and Kirk Jones sank three free throws to cut the lead to six with 7:28 remaining.
W&L came within one with 4:04 left to play in regulation when McHugh hit two free throws. Poindexter answered with a jumper followed by Peery to make it a five point deficit (64-59) for the Generals with 3:05 on the clock.
The Generals went on an 8-2 run to end the contest to win the game. A three-pointer and the game-winner from White sealed the second-straight win in Salem for the Generals, 68-66.
White led the Generals with 22 points, three rebounds and one steal. Jason Cimino and McHugh both added 11 points for W&L and combined for five boards and four assists. Cimino was 100% from the field, beyond the arc and at the line.
Gaeng was Roanoke's leading scorer with a career high of 17 points, 15 from beyond the arc. He was also perfect at the line and contributed four assists and three rebounds. Peery and Walker also recorded 12 and 10 points respectively and combined for three boards in the contest.
Aaron Tyson had four assists and two blocked shots in the loss to give him 60 career blocks. Tyson is only two blocks away from joining the top-10 all-time at Roanoke in career blocked shots.

At 14-2 and 6-1 in the ODAC, Roanoke is atop of the ODAC standings. Roanoke was ranked #21 in this week's D3Hoops Top-25 Poll. Curtis Peery, who is the ODAC-leader in free-throw percentage (85.9%) is ranked third in the ODAC in scoring (19.1 ppg), fourth in rebounding (7.3 rpg) and field goal percentage (57%). The Maroons fell to W&L at home this past weekend in a near capacity crowd that broke the 13-game win-streak. It was tied for the longest since the 1999-00 season. Curtis Peery averaged 17.7 points and 5.7 boards for the week. He had 24 points and 10 rebounds in an 80-76 win over Guilford on Monday.
Record Watch
With two more blocks, senior forward Aaron Tyson will join the top-10 all-time at Roanoke in career blocked shots. He comes into tonight's game with 60 for his career. Tyson is third in the ODAC in blocked shots (25).
Curtis Peery passed Tony Proietti '52 and Jared Butler '06 for 22nd on the all-time scoring list with 1,176 points. He needs 13 more points to gain sole possession of 21st moving past Mike Bake '81 with 1,188. The Salem native recorded his third-consecutive double-double his sixth of the season with 24 points and 10 rebounds in the 80-76 victory over Guilford. Peery was also the second leading scorer against Bridgewater (17).
Roanoke Remain in Top-25 Poll for Third-Straight Week
Roanoke, who is 14-2, 6-1 in the ODAC, remained in the top-25 after the loss to W&L with a #21 national ranking. The Maroons are the only ODAC conference team to be ranked but are joined by ODAC-foe Randolph-Macon who received 21 votes.

Curtis Peery is ranked in the top-five in the ODAC in five different categories. He leads the conference in free throw percentage (85.9%) and is fourth in scoring (19.1), rebounding (7.3), and field goal percentage (57%). In addition, Peery is ranked 49th nationally in field goal percentage, 60th in scoring and 62nd in free-throw percentage.
Parrish Walker is ranked fourth in the ODAC averaging 2.06 steals per game. He has recorded 33 steals this season. Drew Gaeng is ranked fifth in three-point percentage (45.5) in the conference and is also eighth in assists (2.94 apg). Aaron Tyson's 25 blocked shots are ranked 37th nationally and third in the ODAC in addition to his 5.7 rebounds per game, ranked 10th in the ODAC.
