Eastern Mennonite Downs Roanoke, 119-91
HARRISONBURG, Va. --- Eastern Mennonite put up 69 first-half points and built a 21-point halftime lead en route to a 119-91 victory over Roanoke Saturday evening. The Maroons dropped to 5-8 and 2-2 in conference play. The Royals improved to 11-1, 5-0 in the ODAC.
EMU, ranked 24th in the D3Hoops.com Top-25 poll, hit 13 three-pointers, 28-for-34 from the line while outscoring Roanoke, 34-8 in points off turnovers to continue its best start in school-history. The Royals out-rebounded Roanoke, 52-45 and took care of the ball, with 21 assists to only nine turnovers.
Roanoke, which scored 90-or-more points for the second-straight game, shot well from the floor (47.9%) and connected on 9-of-15 three-pointers (60%). The Maroons allowed 100-plus points for the first time since 2007 against Emory & Henry and ties the record for most points allowed (119 vs. Old Dominion, 1968) against the sixth-ranked scoring offense in the country. The Royals, which won by 28, are ranked seventh nationally in win-margin.
Roanoke led the first seven minutes of play before Eastern Mennonite erupted on a 27-6 run over the next five minutes to make it 46-26 with 8:28 remaining. By the end of the first half, the Maroons went into the locker room in a big hole with the largest halftime deficit (-21) and the most first-half points allowed all season, 69-48.
With the score 70-52 at the 18:38 mark in the second half, the Royals went on an 18-6 run to increase their lead to 30, 88-58 with 13:29 remaining, which kept the Maroons out of reach to remain undefeated and atop the ODAC standings.
The Maroons were led by Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)with 22 points followed by Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)with 17 along with four rebounds. Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School)was hot from the field, shooting 6-for-7 including two three-pointers for 14 points in addition to a team-high eight rebounds. Kwasi Amponsah (Woodbridge, VA, Garfield)added 14 points and six rebounds, both career-highs. Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)had eight points, eight rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots. Adam Kessler (Norfolk, VA, Maury)posted season-highs of eight points (4-of-6 shooting) and three rebounds including a breakaway dunk late in the second half.
EMU had six players score in double-figures led by DJ Hinson with 22 points off of six three-pointers and five rebounds. Todd Phillips scored 21 points along with seven rebounds and a game-high six steals. Eli Crawford finished with 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds off the bench.
The men return to action this Wednesday, Jan. 13 as they travel back up I-81 to Harrisonburg to take on Bridgewater at Nunninger Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
