Second Half Shooting Woes Cost Roanoke in Defeat to Bridgewater
BRIDGEWATER, Va. --- Roanoke shot 57.1% in the first half, but managed only 22.2% from the field for the final 20 minutes in an 80-62 loss to Bridgewater at Nininger Hall on Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 5-9 overall, 2-3 in the ODAC while the Eagles improved to 4-8, 2-4 in conference play.
With a slim 46-44 halftime lead, Bridgewater outscored Roanoke 24-4 down the stretch and 34-18 in the second half as the Maroons dropped their first game to the Eagles since 2005. Roanoke blistered the nets in the first half, including 8-of-11 from three-point range. But the Maroons went cold in the second half, shooting 6-for-27 from the floor, 1-of-7 from beyond the arc. Nearly 14 minutes went by without a field goal down the stretch.
Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem) led Roanoke in scoring for the fourth-straight game with 14 points. Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)scored 10 of his 14 points in the first half and pulled down six rebounds. Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)tossed in nine points as Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School)posted six points and a team-best eight boards. Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)added seven points and five rebounds.
Domonic Trawick finished with 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead Bridgewater. Jake Johnson posted 20 points and five rebounds while Kordero Thompson chipped in five points and seven caroms.
Roanoke jumped out to a 10-4 lead to open the game, scoring successfully on its first three possessions. Bridgewater came back to tie the contest, 18-18, after a made layup by Kyle Hammond with 13:20 remaining.
Felix, who scored all 14 of his points in the first half, led his team on a 12-2 run to give the Maroons a 30-20 advantage. The Salem product scored 10 of the 12 points during that span which gave Roanoke a 10-point lead with 9:44 to go in the half.
After Crizer's three made the score 40-27 with six minutes remaining, Bridgewater responded with a 19-4 run to end the half. A made layup by Trawick at the buzzer gave the Eagles a two-point halftime edge at 46-44.
The Maroons opened the second half scoring eight of the first 11 points to give them a 52-49 lead with 14:51 to go. Bridgewater responded with a 15-2 run to take the lead for good, building a 64-54 lead with just over seven minutes remaining.
The men return to action Saturday, Jan. 16, when the Maroons host Washington & Lee. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the C. Homer Bast Center.
