Roanoke Holds on to Win 60-59 over Washington & Lee
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke held off a late run to claim a 60-59 victory over Washington & Lee in ODAC action Saturday evening. The Maroons improved to 6-9 overall, 3-3 in the ODAC. The Generals dropped its record to 9-5, 3-3 in conference play.
Up 51-41 with 5:28 remaining, Roanoke withstood a late Washington & Lee 18-8 run over the final five minutes. Back-to-back three pointers by Zac White and Jason Cimino erased the Generals deficit to tie the contest at 59-apiece with 16-seconds remaining.
With six-seconds left, Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)sank a free throw for the eventual game-winner. The Generals lost the ball on their final possession as time expired as Page Moir inches closer to becoming the ODAC's all-time wins leader. He is now two wins shy of tying the late Bob Johnson (Emory & Henry) with 230 conference wins.
Walker finished the night with team-highs of 11 points, six rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)tossed in 11 points to go with four rebounds. Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School)added seven points and five boards while Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)had six points and three blocked shots for the second-straight game.
Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)scored all eight of his points in the first half for the second-consecutive outing before leaving the game with an ankle injury. Papa Fall (Senegal, South Kent School (CT))chipped in six points and pulled down a career-high six rebounds.
Ben Goetsch led W&L with 16 points on 7-of-14 shooting and eight rebounds. White finished with 12 points, including 5-of-5 from the line and six rebounds. Andrew Payne added nine points and six boards off the bench for the Generals. Cimino dished out five assists to go along with five counters.
Down 19-14 with 5:57 to go, Roanoke ended the half on a 12-4 run. Kwasi Amponsah buried a three-pointer on the wing from Walker as time expired to go into the locker room with a 26-23 lead.
Roanoke scored 10 of the first 15 points as its lead was extended to eight in the first four minutes gone in the second half. W&L responded by scoring on its next three possessions to cut the Maroons lead to within two, 36-34 at the 14-minute mark.
Layups by Fall, Adam Kessler (Norfolk, VA, Maury)and Walker capped an 11-2 run over the next 2:15 to push the Maroons lead to 11 with 8:45 remaining. Crizer highlighted the run with a deep three as time expired on the shot clock.
The men will travel to Greensboro, NC Monday to take on Guilford in conference action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
