Roanoke Topped by #6 Guilford
GREENSBORO, NC --- Roanoke shot well from the floor (40.4%) including nine three-pointers, but Guilford proved too much in a 96-62 loss at Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse on Monday evening. The Maroons dropped to 6-10 overall, 3-4 in ODAC play. The Quakers improved to 15-1, 6-1 in the conference.
Though Roanoke played well on the offensive end, they couldn't stop Guilford, which enjoyed a hot shooting night. The Quakers shot 50.7% from the floor, including 45.8% from downtown and outscored the Maroons, 24-4 in points off turnovers. GC outrebounded Roanoke, 45-30, which led to 41 points in the paint and 17 second chance points.
Roanoke, which has not won at Guilford since 2006, had Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)top the Maroons scoring column with 15 points. Playing in his hometown, the Dudley (NC) High School product also totaled five rebounds and five assists. He shot 3-of-6 from beyond the arc which tied a career-high.
Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds. Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)tossed in eight in addition to five caroms and three assists.
Guilford, ranked #6 according to D3Hoops.com Top-25 Poll, was led by Clay Henson with a career-highs of 30 points and eight three-pointers. Tyler Sanborn finished with 19 points but was held to only five rebounds. The Pre-Season All-American candidate currently leads the ODAC in rebounding at 13.7 per contest.
A Singleton three-pointer gave the Maroons its only lead of the contest, 9-8 before Guilford scored 15-straight points to make it, 23-9 with 10:09 remaining.
Roanoke cut it to nine with 6:36 left before Guilford finished the half scoring 23 of the final 35 points to take a 20-point lead, 50-30, at halftime. Henson was lights out from downtown, hitting six three-pointers to help give him a career-best 24 first-half points.
The Maroons cut their deficit to 17, but Guilford again extended its lead, going on a 22-3 run to make it 81-45 with 8:33 remaining.
A few bright moments came at the end of the game as Dustin DeMaria (Newport, NC, Fork Union Millitary Academy (VA))and Danny Schmitt (Ashland, VA, Patrick Henry)each hit their first career three-pointers. Adam Kessler grabbed his first career steal and hit a career-high three free throws.
The Maroons will return home on Wednesday as they host Randolph College in their second meeting, first in the Bast Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
