Guilford Pulls Away in Second Half to Down Roanoke, 86-70
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke fell to Guilford, 86-70 in ODAC action on Wednesday evening at the Bast Center. The Maroons dropped to 6-13 overall, 3-7 in the ODAC. The Quakers, ranked second in the country according to D3Hoops.com, improved to 17-1, 8-1 in conference play.
The Maroons looked impressive on paper, outscoring the Quakers, 18-9 off the bench and caused 18 Guilford turnovers. They were aggressive on the defensive end, with a season-best 14 steals which led to 22 points off turnovers. Roanoke took care of the ball, with 13 assists to a season-low eight turnovers on the evening.
The difference in the game down the stretch came down low, as Guilford outrebounded Roanoke, 51-26. The 19 Quaker offensive rebounds led to 19 second chance points, 36 in the paint as well.
Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)led the Maroons with 15 points, 6-for-11 shooting including 3-of-3 from the line. He dished out a team-best four assists. He averages 14.5 points in four games against Guilford in his career. Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half along with a career-high four steals. Felix has scored in double-figures in six of seven career games against the Quakers.
Guilford led 18-7 in the first six minutes of action before a 9-2 Roanoke run cut the Quaker lead to four with 10-minutes remaining in the first half. Pre-Season All-American candidate Tyler Sandborn scored seven of the next nine points for the Quakers to extend their lead to 13 at the 6:59 mark.
Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)answered back, scoring two of the next three Maroon buckets to cut it to within seven just before the half. Guilford went into the locker room with a 10-point advantage, 36-26.
A Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)three-pointer made it an eight-point game, 42-34, with 17:49 remaining. Then Guilford responded in a big way with an 18-2 run over the next 4:20 to give them a 24-point advantage.
Roanoke wouldn't go away, going on a 14-3 run to cut its deficit to 13, but was not able to climb back into single digits. But the Quakers, who shot 51.7% in the second half, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, pulled away to stay atop the ODAC standings with their 17th win of the season.
Adam Kessler (Norfolk, VA, Maury), who played in a career-high 19 minutes tonight, scored six points and pulled down three rebounds. His four steals were also a career-best. All five of his steals this season have come against Guilford. Michael McGeough (Danville, VA, George Washington)added five points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Guilford had three players with over 20 points. Sandborn led the Quakers with game-highs of 29 points, 18 rebounds and four blocked shots. Clay Henson and Rhett Bonner each poured in 21 points.
The men are on the road this Saturday against Lynchburg College in ODAC action. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Turner Gymnasium.
