Roanoke's Comeback Falls Short at Lynchburg
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Roanoke rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit to cut it to single-digits, but Lynchburg held on to win, 87-76, at Turner Gym Sunday afternoon. Roanoke dropped to 6-14 overall, 3-8 in the ODAC. The Hornets improved to 9-10, 4-6 in conference play.
Down, 71-53, Roanoke battled its way back with a 19-8 run to cut the Hornet lead to just seven with 2:05 remaining in regulation. Lynchburg finished 8-for-8 down the stretch from the line to ice the game and give former Roanoke All-American Hilliary Scott (Lynchburg, VA, EC Glass)'94 his first win over his former coach, Page Moir.
Roanoke was hot from the floor in the first half, shooting 52% (13-of-25) and finished 43.6% for the game. They were 25-of32 from the charity stripe, including 85% in the second half which helped bring the Maroons back in the game.
The Maroons outrebounded their opponent, 35-31. They outscored the Hornets, 30-26 in the paint, including 12-8 in second chance points. RC also had 28 of its 36 bench points in the second half, led by Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)who scored all of his 11 after halftime.
Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)led four Roanoke players in double-figures with 16 points, 13 in the first half. He added six rebounds and three steals, both team-highs. Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School)scored 13 points (6-of-7 shooting) and pulled down six boards. Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave)chipped in 10 counters, eight in the second half along with three assists. It is his fifth game of the season in double-figures, second in four games.
Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)added seven points, six rebounds and three assists. Adam Kessler (Norfolk, VA, Maury)was productive off the bench again for the Maroons, as he tossed in eight points and hit 4-of-4 from the line. He has shot 9-of-15 (60%) for 22 points over the last three games.
Steven Echols poured in a game-high 26 points, shooting 10-of-11 from the line along with seven assists. Nathan Campbell had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. He shot 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Jeff Langrock tossed in 11 including 5-of-5 from the line.
The men will host #9 Randolph-Macon this Wednesday, Feb. 3 at the Bast Center in ODAC action. It will be the seventh meeting against a team either that has either been ranked or has received votes in the D3Hoops.com Top-25. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
