Late Free Throws help Hampden-Sydney Pull Away from Roanoke
ROANOKE, Va. --- Hampden-Sydney held off Roanoke in a 77-63 win at Hollins University on Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 6-16 overall, 3-10 in the ODAC. The Tigers improved to 12-11, 7-7 in conference play.
On the night, the Tigers shot 51% from the field and 7-16 (43.8%) from three-point range. They were also 18-22 (81.8%) from the charity stripe and out-rebounded the Maroons, 38-33.
Both teams came out of the gates, but Hampden-Sydney took the early 9-4 advantage after a Karlis Trops layup at the 16:00 mark. Roanoke slowly chipped away at the lead and Kwasi Amponsah hit a jumper to put the Maroons up 13-12 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the half.
Roanoke used the next three and a half minutes to push its lead to 22-12, but the Tigers went on a 13-4 over the next four and a half minutes. Turner King and Harrison George scored the Tigers' next nine points, and then Hakeem Croomscored two huge buckets to put the Tigers within one at 26-25 with 4:51 to play.
Melvin Felix tied the game at 28, but Hampden-Sydney spurted out to a 10-0 run, ending the half with a 38-28 lead.
The Tigers extended their lead to 13 before the Maroons went on an 11-4 run. A Matt Crizer triple cut the Roanoke made the score, 50-44.
Back-to-back three-pointers by H-SC sparked a 14-1 run to give the Tigers a game-high 19-point lead with 7:50 remaining.
Roanoke showed some fight and wouldn't go away, scoring the next 12 points. At the 3:20 mark, the Maroons trailed by only seven, 64-57. George and King knocked down nine-of-10 free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the win and return above .500 on the season.
George led all scorers, tying his career-high of 24, which came against Roanoke in the December meeting. He shot 8-12 from the floor with a game-high 11 rebounds. King had 22 points back in his hometown while Randall Ward and Mudd added eight points each.
Roanoke was led by Crizer who scored 16 points and three steals while Chittock added nine points and five rebounds. Parrish Walker finished with nine points, five boards and four assists.
Roanoke returns to action Saturday, February 13 as the face nationally-ranked Eastern Mennonite on Senior Night. Prior to the game, Page Moir will recognize his four seniors. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm. at the Bast Center.
