Roanoke falls to Washington & Lee on the Road
LEXINGTON, Va. --- Roanoke fell to Washington & Lee, 75-53 at the Warner Center on Wednesday evening. The Maroons dropped to 6-18 overall, 3-12 in the ODAC. The Generals improved to 16-8, 8-7 in conference play.
The Maroons played tonight without the services of starting guard and leading scorer, Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem), out for the remainder of the season with an ankle injury. It was the first loss suffered to the Generals since Zac White's last-second shot defeated Roanoke in a 68-66 win in January of 2009.
W&L held the Maroons scoreless for the game's first 6:59 to open up a 14-0 lead. RC scored its first basket at the 13:01 mark, but the Generals promptly scored eight of the game's next nine points to assume the largest lead of the first half at 22-3. Down 28-10, the Maroons outscored the Generals, 12-6 to end the half with a 34-22 deficit.
Roanoke slipped twice below double digits, the last time coming on a layup from sophomore forward Michael McGeough (Danville, VA, George Washington)with 14:53 to play that put the Maroons within nine. One the ensuing possession, junior guard Jason Cimino answered with a three-pointer to put the Generals back up by 12 and W&L never looked back in winning its eighth conference game of the season.
The two teams shot a nearly identical percentage from the field. Roanoke shot 40.4 percent (21-52) for Washington & Lee at 40.6 percent (26-64). The Generals out-rebounded the Maroons, 43-29, including 15-5 on the offensive glass.
Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley), who sat out last game, led the Maroons with season-highs of 15 points and seven rebounds. Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)finished with 10 points, five rebounds and a career-best four steals. He needs one more three-pointer to become 10th on the single-season list at Roanoke. He currently has 47 treys on the season. Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)added seven points, six rebounds and three assists.
Jeremy Adkins enjoyed a career-night, with 23 points and five three-pointers in addition to five rebounds. Ben Goetsch had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Jason Cimino chipped in eight points and a game-high five assists.
The Maroons travel to Emory, Va. on Saturday in their regular season finale against the Wasps of Emory & Henry. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
