Felix's Free Throws Seal RC Victory
SALEM, Va. --- Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)sank a pair of free throws with six seconds remaining to provide the difference in a grinder on Saturday afternoon as Roanoke College edged the University of Mary Washington, 64-62, to cap the 16th Annual V-Foundation Classic. The Maroons improve to 2-1 on the campaign while the Eagles fall to 1-1 following its season-opening showing in the C. Homer Bast Center.

A very deliberate, half court-oriented pace helped Roanoke grind its way to as much as a 13-point lead in the second half. Foul trouble also affected strategy for both squads. UMW lost Brandon Altmann with a little more than six minutes to play, while four fouls on both sophomore centers Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)and Papa Fall (Senegal, South Kent School (CT))forced the Maroons to go small for much of the second half.

With about four minutes remaining, Mary Washington started to push the tempo with earnest as they brought themselves back to within three points at 62-59 with 0:40 on the clock. Following an RC turnover and a block out of bounds by Singleton, UMW guard Ryan Farrar canned a three-pointer from the right wing to tie the score at 62-62 with 0:09 to play.

With the full length of the court in front of them, Roanoke came out of a UMW timeout with thoughts of taking the last shot. Instead, Felix was fouled off the in-bounds with six seconds to play. He promptly cashed in both charity tosses to retake the lead for Roanoke. Eagles' guard Rocky Ullah had one last shot at the Maroons' rim. His three-pointer drew iron twice before falling off the cylinder as the buzzer sounded.
Felix led four Maroons in double figures with 14 points on 4-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the line. Senior Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School)added 13 points and eight rebounds while juniors Matt Crizer (Covington, VA, Alleghany)and Corey Poindexter (Pulaski, VA, Pulaski County/Hargrave)each chipped in 10 markers. Crizer added six boards and a game-high six assists to his stat line. Poindexter was 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.

Mary Washington was led by 11 points from J.R. Gray and Eric Rolander. Gray also collected six rebounds, including four via the offensive glass. Altmann notched 10 points to go with eight boards before fouling out of the contest. Farrar finished with eight points and six caroms.

Roanoke shot 42.9-percent against a 22.7 clip for Mary Washington in the first half. With that said, it was the Eagles who commanded the early momentum as they moved out to a 6-1 lead with 2:30 gone. Their lead reached a high of six points at 9-3, but a jumper from Felix and a trey from Poindexter cut the Maroons' deficit to one with 12:24 to go in the half.

Crizer gave the Maroons their first lead of the game at 13-12 with a three-pointer at the 9:46 mark. The lead changed hands four more times before Roanoke grabbed control on a Felix long-distance make for a 21-18 advantage with 6:10 on the clock. That field goal started a 12-4 to close the half, sending both squads into the intermission with RC ahead, 30-22.

Mary Washington opened the second stanza with a run of its own, drawing even at 32-32 on a pair of free throws by Altmann to cap a 12-2 streak at the 16:18 mark. Two layups by junior Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley), including one acrobatic effort, gave Roanoke a four point advantage. The Maroons' lead grew to nine points with 10:05 play following a pair of free throws by freshman Kwasi Amponsah (Woodbridge, VA, Garfield).

UMW pulled to within three at 47-44 with 7:13 to play, but a three-pointer by Crizer, a three-point play by Singleton and a jumper by Chittock quickly produced a double-digit lead at 55-44 with 5:16 to go. Two foul shots by Poindexter with 3:57 put RC in front, 60-47, with 3:57 remaining, setting up the game's final few minutes.

Roanoke returns to action on Saturday, November 28, as the Maroons hit the road for the first time this season. The Maroons travel to Stevenson University for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off against the Mustangs in Stevenson, Maryland.
