Walker Leads Roanoke to 80-70 win at Stevenson
STEVENSON, Md. --- Parrish Walker (Greensboro, NC, Dudley)led all scorers with 24 points to lead Roanoke to an 80-70 win over Stevenson Saturday afternoon. The Maroons improved their season mark to 3-1 while the Mustangs remain winless at 0-6. It was the first meeting against Stevenson, but is now 72-48 against Maryland schools.
Roanoke shot 46% from the field, better than their opponents' 34% on the afternoon. The Mustangs' Achilles heel was at the free-throw line, hitting just 9-of-23 for a mere 39% charity stripe. Stevenson did out-rebound the Maroons, 51-47 as both teams caused 26 turnovers.
Roanoke scored the first seven points and jumped out to a 20-8 lead in the first nine minutes of action. Michael McGeough (Danville, VA, George Washington)hit a three-pointer to spark the early run as the Maroons never trailed during the contest.
Stevenson fought back to tie the contest at 29-all as Clifton Jones layup capped a 21-9 run with two minutes left in the half. The Maroons went into the half with a four-point lead, 36-32.
The Maroons stormed out the gate to open the second half with an 8-1 run to make it, 44-33 at the 18-minute mark. They kept the Mustangs at bay, maintaining a double-digit lead for most of the second half to win their third game of the season.
Walker was 10-for-15 from the floor, in addition to six rebounds, all coming on the offensive end. He also totaled three assists and two steals. Melvin Felix (Caguas, Puerto Rico, Salem)finished with 15 points, 6-of-10 from the floor in 19 minutes of action.
Kendrick Chittock (Auburn, OH, University School)had his first double-double of his career with 17 points (7-of-11 shooting) and 12 rebounds in the victory. Logan Singleton (Roanoke, VA, Hidden Valley)totaled eight points, four rebounds and three steals for the Maroons.
Greg Collins led Stevenson with 16 points and four steals, followed by Jason Scroggins with 13 points and five rebounds. Clifton Jones tossed in 10 counters along with five rebounds for the Mustangs while Patrick Lewis pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
The men will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 as they travel to Farmville to battle ODAC-rival Hampden-Sydney in their conference-opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
